648908 One of the Worst ive seen worser...

To all those anti-ulster whingers spouting the same cliched nonsense year in year out, the above is the intellect of your peers. Congratulations, you must be so proud.

Dont worry breff, Tomaoo only gets better as the championship progresses, come Dublins demise in August he will be using words of two syllables or more!

Anyone else think that liathroidboy is the HS equivalent of 'Comic book guy' from the Simpsons, you can just picture him with his "Worst game ever" T shirt!

I actually enjoyed watching the Armagh defensive stategy in action, a lot of people just go with what the pundits say, it was a lot more enjoyable to watch that the rubbish in semple stadium.

I admit I have no problem with the defensive set ups. I'm all for setting up tactics to win as winning is all that matters, if it works then fair play. I just found the tacking cynical and awful to watch.

Im 100% sure Bref isnt from either Armagh or Derry, so when you used the word "you" in that sentence, you are implying that it is the best Ulster has to offer.

if mayo or dublin win a all ireland ugly or any of there supporters going to write in and say hand sam back. the derry\armagh match was a tough match for both and best team won because of there defence ( take note tipp 10 yards of there men) nobody is saying it was a classic but give credit to armagh,s defence.

I see the anti Ulster football has raised it's head again. As Joe Brolly put it to Pat Spillane there is two teams in Munster Kerry n Cork and the rest are no where near competin.

How many teams in Ulster would beat Tipp or Limerick in the championship? Certainly I wouldn't be rushing to the bookies to back FDermanagh, Down, Antrim, Donegal or Cavan against them.

Limerick remember hammered Meath, who beat Tyrone handily throughout the last decade.

Also remember that in the last two years WEXFORD and WICKLOW beat nearly everything in Ulster.

Im not twisting your words, it is blatant that you meant Ulster - not Derry or Armagh. If you worded it wrong, fair enough everyone makes mistakes.

ah lad you...means you, singular version not the plural. I would have gone with 'ye', maybe we're just lost in translation on two dif sides of the county

Tedious, really tedious. First game of the year and its been labelled as the worst ever. Lazy, sensationalist assessment that one expects of the tabloids.

You can't win a Championship in May but you sure can lose one. Maybe if mayo had played a bit of defensive football in Croker in the past 20 years you wouldn't be the losers you are.

poor start to the championship but was never going to be the cracking game people were expecting. always fancied armagh and i think it just showed us that neither team are capable of an all ireland!!! this year anyway

Poor fair overall, but could watch Stevie Mcdonnell all day definately in the top 4 or five players in the country. Thought Aaron Kernan was good too. Derry lost the game through a bit of petulance from young bradley. Armagh starting to make shapes again. Where is the big full forward they have?

Yesterday's match in Celtic Park and the procession in Thurles perfectly illustrate why the Provincial championships are no longer relevant or appealing as a spectacle. What is the point in 6/7 months training when most teams know well that there summer ends after 2 matches? And for many mediocre teams, the fear of losing or not performing on the day inhibits them from giving it a real go as seen in derry. And the occasional flash in the pan result once in a blue moon is no justification for keeping the provincials. If the GAA are serious about providing an attractive product to appeal to an audience now spoiled for choice with other sports, then new blood with fresh ideas and less nonsense is required. This is nothing new or ground breaking but is a matter of urgency:

1.Provincial competitions perhaps used instead of National league as a good start to the year with a bit of local passion
2.8 groups of four teams competing in a Champs Lge style draw for championship. For the first year, positions in the National League can be used to seed the teams in bowls 1-4, one from each bowl making the group
3.Games played on Sat evenings at the same time meaning no teams know what result is required beforehand
4.To avoid pointless bottom of the table games, make teams seeding for next years draw be based on where they finish within their group this year. This gives weaker teams an incentive to keep going as they might finish 3rd and have a slightly easier group next year. It also guarantees everyone at least 3 matches
5. Top 2 qualify to a knock out stage......simple

At the moment, our best GAA players spend about 90% of time training and about 10% playing high quality matches. This is all wrong and leads to the type of fear and cynicism we witnessed yesterday in Celtic Park. I feel sorry for excellent footballers who probably feel like throwing their hat at it this morning and heading to America before the Summer has even started. Rugby made sweeping changes to its administration and its surge in popularity speaks for itself!

Excellent post Derm......

The whole hang up the GAA seem to have with changing the All Ireland format is the LOSS of provincial championships, the suggestion you've made of using the provincial's instead of the National Leagues and then the seeding depending on final placing, is one of the best revamp ideas I've read in a long time.
Champions League style groups would probably be overlooked on the All Ireland stage though, as the extra fixtures would interfere too much with club football.
Our players have commitments to two teams Club & County, That's the difference between a GAA player and a Rugby player. Club fixtures are an integral part of the GAA, at the minute Clubs suffer enough through having to play games without their county players so any revamp that involved even more County fixtures would definitely be rejected.

I suggest something like this :-

1. Scrap the National Leagues
2. Replace the National Leagues with the old Provincial Championships
3. New Provincial Championships to each have 2 Groups with each County playing at least 3 group games , Top 2 Teams from Each section playing off in Provincial Semi Finals
4. Seeding for new All Ireland "Open Draw" depending on each County's final Provincial Championship placing
5. Higher Scoring averages & Higher Points/Goals scored will ensure a higher All Ireland Seeding and therefore create more incentive for teams to be more Attacking than Defensive
6. Open All Ireland Draw with teams Seeded into different pots
7. Back Door Qualifier Draw scrapped to reduce fixtures.
With the new "Provincial Seeding" in place All County games will be "Meaningful", more competitive and hopefully more Attack Minded as More Scores = Higher All Ireland Seeding
