Is there a lack of quality players in Wicklow??

Conan Daye and Fergus Daly? Daly was a towering midfielder. Daye a clever half forward. Pat O'Byrne also played in 80's and 90's. He was a midfielder on compromise rules teams at turn of that decade

Andy Phillips (Goalkeeper), Jim Rogers (midfielder, I think), Moses Coffey, Pat O'Byrne, Kevin O'Brien, Fergus Daly and Leighton Glynn would grace ANY county side, so don't talk nonsense PomeroyPlunkett. In hurling Don Hyland of Carnew (played for Leinster) and Jonathan O'Neill of Glenealy would likewise grace ANY hurling field in this country. We just don't have enough players of this calibre and never in the one team at the same time, but to say we have never produced one player of top quality in either code is utter drivel. And to the Wexfordman who says we're all rugger-buggers and soccerheads, go to Rathnew (Leinster Club Football Champions 2001) or Baltinglass (Leinster and All-Ireland Champions 1990) or Glenealy or Carnew and tell them they're not GAA people. They're GAA to the core mate. Insulting that is.

Lads ignore Pomeroy. WUM of the highest order. One of the classic cases of nouveau riche. He has absolutely no class whatsoever.

Both Wicklow ( and Carlow for that matter ) have some fine individual players who would get onto many county teams.

Pointless thread.

646953 Pomeroy - Kevin O'Brien won an all-star and was widely regarded as one of the best footballers of his time. He was also very successful in the compromise rules team that went down to Oz in 1990

Pomeroy should be forgiven lads. All of these players were around before 2003 and therefore before Pomeroy had ever heard of Gaelic football.

Kevin O Brien was one of the greatest footballers of his generation.
Anyone with any knowledge of IC football could tell you that.

Wumming aside, I do think there is some truth to this argument. Generally speaking Micko doesn't introduce subs in games, and if he does it'll be the same lads time and time again. They haven't been able to find a decent replacement for Thomas Walsh yet, which would suggest that it has been a few years since they've had two midfielders of intercounty standard within the county.

The club scene is pretty weak also. One poster from Dublin felt the standard was good-he probably remembers Rathnew putting it up to Na Fianna and others about 10 years ago, and Baltinglass in the 1980's. What happened in those eras was that two good teams came along and dominated the scene for about 10 years, similar to Crossmaglen in Armagh. That had a detrimental effect on the county team at times, particularly Rathnew who would regularly have some gripe with the County Board, and pull about 10 lads of the county squad. At the moment no strong team is there, and overall the standard is pretty average.

Underage were a complete disgrace for many years, although I gather they are putting more effort into preperation these days.

Underage isnt great Ringo alright. But. I have seen an improvement in interest at least in the county over the last 4 years. I was down at a schools camogie final recently and there was a group of 4 young lads kicking around on the sidelines all in Wicklow jerseys. Years ago they would have been United or Liverpool or Arsenal.

Ringo Rathnew didn't just put it up to Na Fianna as you put it. They beat them 2-16 to 1-10 in extra time after a replay in the 2001 Leinster Club Football Final.. a little more than ''putting it up to them'', that's what Fulham did the other night!!
