Is there a lack of quality players in Wicklow??

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

It appears there must be a serious lack of quality players in Wicklow when a player can come back to the country two days before a championship game meaning he hasn't taken part in one training session and gets straight back onto the team.

I would hate have been training since early January with Wicklow only to be told a couple of days before the big game that they are flying a man back from Sweden to play in my position.

I never understood why Wicklow have such a poor record in gaelic games. I would have thought they would have a strong enough club scene and large enough population with it being so close to Dublin.
Not having a go but could anyone from Wicklow why they haven't really been a stronger outfit. I remember them giving Meath a scare 20 years ago but nothing up until Micko took over. They had a good run last year but were very limited in numbers on the panel

Poor is right, they only used 17 players or so in last years championship and thats only because 2 players got injured.
If Micko can only find that amount of good enough players for county level, then things must be bad.

And they have been training since the start of november actually. All they did was running and gym work until january, never seen a football.

They are all soccer and rugger heads in Wicklow. Even down south in Arklow they wouldn't be much into GAA.

I think it's fair to say Wicklow haven't produced one quality player in either code ever. That's truly a remarkable achievement

He played in the National League against Waterford and has been around for the majority of league matches. I was shocked when I seen drafted in. I knew he was working abroad but as far as I knew he was training while away

Pemroy. Kevin O'Brien and Leighton Gynn not quality? Ciaran Hyland is one of best man markers in Ireland

Look up mediocre in the dictionary and you'll see them three players mentioned. Good in Wicklow yes, wouldn't be near the Tyrone panel. And Biffo they don't train as hard as the Tyrone's, Kerry's, Cork's. If they did they wouldn't be so poor. Sad but true

Good in Wicklow? Was the Irish international rules team always 15 Tyrone players?

I couldn't care less about the International Rules team, stupid sport that I have no interest in. It was good of them to give Leighton Glynn a run out though, was a nice gesture towards the smaller counties if rather patronising. Needless to say if it was based on the best players Leighton would have been nowhere near it

Pomeroy - Kevin O'Brien won an all-star and was widely regarded as one of the best footballers of his time. He was also very successful in the compromise rules team that went down to Oz in 1990.

I give up Pemeroy. You may step back from those rose tinted glasses and realise that players such as Glynn, Hyland even Murphy (Carlow) O'Lionain (waterford) tubridy (clare) All divison 4 players have quality. Would problably make nearly every county team

Leighton Glynn would be Tyrone's best half forward by some distance if he played for them

Like I said the GAA have a history of rewarding players in the smaller counties. I don't agree with it as it's very patronising but it a boost for them I guess. As for O'Brien people tend to look at past players through rose tainted glasses and think they're better than they are. If he was playing today he wouldn't be a stand out player

Look PomeroyPlunkett it took Tyrone UNTIL 1924 to win their FIRST Championship Match, so don't be so smug. It was wasn't always the way that people feared Tyrone by the way. I like Tyrone but your arrogance knows no bounds. If it's not Division 1, the Ulster championship or the big teams you close your ears and eyes.

Yes Wicklow have had some good player. There were a couple of good players in football around the same time as O'Brien, was it Day or Daly they had too.
