Ratio of Football clubs

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

A question was posed on the Tyrone boards about how many Football/Hurling/Dual clubs there were. When I actually had a look and saw the ratio of Football clubs in Tyrone to Hurlings clubs it filled me with pride. We truly are a Football county, and one of the best at that. But do we have the best ratio of all the counties? What other counties can be classed as basically Football only in terms of clubs? Likewise who has the worst ratio? I'm guessing Kilkenny but just how bad is it down there? Interested if people can enlighten me. Once again Wum's please stay away, this is for serious debate only

Made me smile Pomeroy. Ya certainly have it in for Hurling. Ya a bit like the Labour guy in my office who wines about the Tories for no other reason than they are the opposition. Gets a bit tiring and tedious. Fair enough if you don't like Hurling, but there's no need to constantly give out over it.

Well Pomeroy we have over a 100 clubs, 80% of them dual clubs and a lot of them also have camogie and there are quite a number of handball sections as well. Real GAA clubs ;)

He's a funny lad alright! Methinks he doth protest too much!

Tyrone lads....was there a player from PP's area dropped from the Tyrone hurling panel just before they won the Lory Meagher Cup last year? Because if there was I think we know who it is...........

Club History of Pomeroy Plumketts GAC.

The name of Plunkett Park has a dual significance. One of our patrons was a mighty figure in the history of the Catholic Church in Ireland of almost three hundred years ago (St. Oliver Plunkett); the other, a valiant, quiet man who died a soldier's death in Ireland's most deathless struggle but a generation ago (Joseph Mary Plunkett). Both bore the same family name and were related by blood. Both won a martyr's crown from minions of the same adversary, the one for the Faith, the other for the Motherland.

Important Dates
1916: POMEROY PLUNKETTS formed, under the patronage of St. Oliver Plunkett and dedicated to the memory of Joseph Mary Plunkett.

1929: POMEROY PLUNKETTS affiliated as a asenior team - beaten by Donaghmore in the delayed 1928 Championship.

1935: PLUNKETTS won Junior Football Championship by beating Greencastle.

1945: WON Junior Football Championship by beating Gortin and East Tyrone Championship and League.

1946: CLUB transferred from East to West Tyrone.

1948: PLUNKETT PARK opened, the second county ground in Tyrone.

1967: WON County Intermediate Championship, County Intermediate League and McElduff Cup.

1972: NEW Pavilion opened.

1980: PLUNKETTS Football Club and St. Mary's Handball Club amalgamated to form Pomeroy Plunketts Gaelic Athletic Club. A sports centre opened, which included a 40 feet by 20 feet indoor handball alley.

1981: Hurling Club formed.

1984: PLUNKETTS won County Junior Championship and County Junior League.

1994: GYMNASIUM installed in sports centre. Bought four and a half acres of land to develop a training pitch.

1998: REDEVELOPED Plunkett Park re-opened to mark its Golden Jubilee. Further three and a half acres of land bought for development.

1999: WON Junior League and Junior Reserve League.

2002: WON under-21 (Grade 2) Championship.

2003: WON under-21 (Grade 2) Championship

2004: SENIORS won County Intermediate League and Championship and Ulster Intermediate Championship. Narrowly beat by Carbery Rovers (Cork) in the All-Ireland Intermediate Football Club Championship Final.

NOT EVERYBODY IN THIS CLUB FEELS THE SAME.

One hurling club in Cavan???

Mullahoran & Ballymchugh have hurling & I thought Cavan Gaels & one of the clubs in the north of the county had hurling too? Lots of camogie in Cavan too.

Think theres about 30 football clubs to 15 hurling clubs in westmeath. This is not including seperate ladies clubs or underage only clubs. I think only one of these clubs is a dual club.

Unusual setup in Westmeath actually. Mullingar for example has 4 seperate GAA clubs - 2 hurling/camógie & 2 football. In some cases in Westmeath a hurling club & a football club share the same grounds (& players usually) but it's not considered a dual club e.g. Rochefortbridge St. Marys (football) & St. Brigids (hurling). I think Delvin is the only dual club in the county.
