Any soldier of any nationality who risks his life has my respect. While they have committed many wrongs in Ireland they were also a key part of why we currently enjoy freedom. Many Irishmen fought and died alongside British soldiers, do we treat these Irish soldiers with the same disdain that has been evident in this thread

Its a no brainer that they shouldnt be penalised for declining to go, but it is an option, with a steady wage, so why not make people aware of it? Some may see it as an opportunity to earn some much needed money and do something productive. There are many different job descriptions in the army, people seem to think that it is all front-line commandos stuff, it isnt the case. I see no harm in making people aware of the possibilities available to them
--------------------------------------

"and do something productive"

Are you serious? Invading another country is productive. Some of you Mayo/Tyrone/Dubs need to catch yourselves on.The National question here has still not been settled. So its deeply offensive and a slap in the face to real Irishmen if an Irish person joins the British army

What is a 'real' Irishman?

And what's your right to ascribe such a title to someone?

its a disgrace that young lads have to look at the british army because of the recruiting ban in our own armed forces

Nothing.

What is wrong is actively seeking out marginalised young men from a disadvantaged area to be your cannon fodder. Dublin09 why aren't they promoting this in say, Blackrock or Donnybrook?

I'm not surprised they were recruiting in the South. The Irish Army is a bit of a closed shop and a lot of young Southerners haven't experienced the British Army 'up close and personal' so I guess a paid career would probably appeal to them. The fact is that the British Army always had Irish, Scots and Welsh regiments who did the Empire's dirty work in far flung lands and indeed closer to home. I also know the British Army has a lot of Scottish Catholics who follow Celtic in their ranks so it isn't a big a surprise as many think. As I said the Northern Nationalist community has very bitter memories and stories about them and there is still a lot of hatred for what they got up to AND got away with. I could write a book, as I'm sure could Patrique and many others who lived through it about the British Army's sinister and murderous role in the North. The sad fact is that the Southern Unionist media has followed the road of the British media and ALWAYS shied away, covered up, buried it's head and shamefully ignored a lot of the crimes of the British Army over the past 40 years. While the Southern media has demonized, badmouthed and treated the entire Northern Nationalist/Republican community quite shamefully it's indulgance, worshipping and fawning of EVERYTHING British, Unionist and Loyalist has been nothing short of a disgrace and quite frankly an embarrassment for a supposedly independent country with a mind of it's own.

In fairness when europe and ireland faced its greatest threat - Nazi germany, the british army (along with a few other) saved irelands very existence. The barstool republicans always seem to forget that...funny that

Hmmm I dont think the British army had Irelands existence in mind when they fought the Nazis. Anyway the British Army were hammered when they were alone. Only with the USA were they any match for Hitler. Sure they were trapped in a corner of northern France awaiting slaughter from the Germans until Hitler called off his advancing tanks. That was his biggest mistake. But of course being British they said their operation was a success.

At least they were fighting scruffy, what did ireland do? declare themselves neutral

The reality is Ireland basically said we will just stand back and watch as you invade country after country and slaughter millions of people. I am no fan of the british army but at least they stood and fought even when as you said they were getting hammered themselves. they never gave up and did a huge amount to stop the spread of nazism, which surely even you must think is a good thing...
