We'd be better of under the Brits

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Ok strange title let me explain.
At first i am a nationalist and would love to see a united Ireland.

But having seen a thread on another forum. I did realise that (however undesired it may be) we as a country would be better of under the brits.
We'd have a much greater economy, with huge spending power, the olympics and a country reognised around the world for its power.

when ireland were under british rule they were one of the richest countrys in the world but ireland was very undeveloped. They made pay rent on our own land and let us strave during the famine. So british rule didnt do much good back then and in WW2 if we stayed part of britain we would have got bombed like hell so i thing the disadvantages out weigh the advantages

Orlaith, how do you feel to live in the UK?? (technically)

See the northern people won't even consider it they just lump things before even considering it.
The Mayo poster makes a very valid point. It would be if threated fairly we would be better under british rule.

I have always said "give us back the 26" but alas the Brits decided in the mid 1960s that there was to be a United Ireland whether we wanted one or not.

The only people against a United Ireland at the moment are....the Irish.

You should be ashamed of yourself Joseff and if you want to live under British rule then you should move across the water and keep your controversial comments to yourself and do not quetion Orlaith on this site as she would know more about it than people in the wee county. You should have joined us last night and I would have gladly explained the situation to you and you would have seen the woman the big fella had.

Josef's right enough.

A question for Patrique. Has anyone ever come with the solution as to how the South will be able to afford the £6bn deficit in the NI economy in the event of a United Ireland? Haven't heard one yet.

That is why I say the only one's against a United Ireland are the Irish.

In a poll a few years back in the south, 85% said they were in favour. When asked if they would pay mpore tax to get a united Ireland, 85% voted no.

The Shinners are never going into a United Ireland run by a Fianna fail/DUP coalition, a logical political move for those parties, so they are against as well until there become stronger in the south. That could take years.

I'm so angry at this thread I'm away for some drink...........only £20 for 3 boxes of beer in most British supermarkets. Now there's a bargain!

And another reason why we'd be better under the Brits.
I demand a referendum so we can rejoin the union !

What a ridculous idea

Just imagine all the horrible things that we would be inflicting upon ourselves

1. The british legal system
2. a two house parilament where one house is not even democratically elected
3. A 3 tier class society
4. Where your choice of fee paying private school means more the brains
5. The sky media system
6. Red top tabloids

Right then joseff B.A Economics, give us a thorough run down on why, economically, we'd be better off in the UK? And I want facts and figures, maybe then will I think of you as anything higher than a WUM.

Drink isn't everything, To be honest Id rather that we were one, No matter how much in debt or hard it would it. The easiest option isn't always the right one!

Economically it would be disastrous if the occupied 6 united with the other 26, for both parties.
The republic (government, not the people) cant manage themselves without having to worry about another 6 counties who rely on civil servants for about 25% of overall employment.
The nordie counties would face big unemployment i imagine when the civil service pull out with no jobs to go to in a united ireland. At least not in these times of recession.
Plus it wouldnt get any easier for us nationlists/ republicans up here considering loyalists would take a united ireland as a freedom fighting campaign for them and the people they represent.
