Traits of a great Midfielder

Brian Mullins was an outstanding midfielder. He was not, in my humble opinion, as mobile, as fast or as complete a footballer as the incomparable, unmarkable, unstoppable Jack O Shea.

Good fielding of the ball, able to offload quickly. Tall physical presence who has an eye for a pass into the fullforward line and most of all, is able to make darting runs through the opposition defense. Best example.. Darragh O'Se

Sean Cavanagh may be the all time best in Tyrone and one of the current stars...BUT in the history of the greats he's is not up there.

I don't think anyone would claim that Seán Cavanagh is a BAD midfielder man!!!!! He's a class act but he's a different player to the likes of McDermott, Walsh, McGrane etc.

I've always saw Seán as more of a deep lying forward who when given a free role can and will destroy teams.

MesAmis sounds just about right to me. Cavanagh is a great footballer, but is not a traditional style of midfielder, and even when he played there he seldom won much primary possession, although he always got forward for a few scores. His best role is as a roaming type of forward, which makes full use of his powerful running and score-taking ability and makes him very hard to mark. Micky Harte seems to agree with myself and MesAmis on this since this is where he has played him for the past number of years. Cavanagh's All-Ireland medal and player of the year award for 2008 lend a wee bit of support to this opinion also!

Seán Cavanagh is an excellent player but he regularly gets cleaned out when he comes up against a midfielder that can actually catch the ball.

Delboy:

I'm not saying that Seán Cavanagh is a bad player, the opposite in fact. He's easily one of the best players in the country. However I stated that he is at his best when given the licence to get forward from midfield when he has someone like Hughes beside him who can win Tyrone the ball round the middle. As well as this Tyrone are brilliant at sweeping up any loose ball thus they do not need Seán to win as much ball from kick outs etc.

The players I have mentioned (Ó Sé, McGrane, Tohill, Walsh and McDermott) were classic midfielders and in fact are the type of player that Seán Cavanagh would excell alongside.

The primary role of a midfielder is to win possession, however that has never been Seán's role. He has had better things to be doing!!
