Good high fielding, good passing, being able to work in defence or attack when needed to help out.

Traits would be leadership qualities etc. Traits can't be taught.

Mick O'Connell of Kerry, 50s, 60s, 70s, wrote the book on midfield play, and he did it all with STYLE! Oh yes, he also took his Scores with style.

And be able to play 70 minutes not drift in and out of games like a certain recently retired midfielder (not Dara) used to

Sean Cavanagh - Perfect example of a great midfielder

Good fielder of the ball
Runs with the ball
Can pick out a pass
Takes his scores
Tackle and track back
Strength
Speed
Skill

that why he's the best player in the game

Is that the same Dara O'Se who cacked himself when he heard Hub Hughes was coming onto mark him in the 2008 All-Ireland Final?

Jack O'Se and Eugene McKenna are arguably the two stand out midfielders of the 80's (even though McKenna won two All-Stars as a forward) .

Sean Cavanagh is the complete all round midfielder having learned his trade from another Ulster Legend Anthony Tohill - both these men showed leadership, athletic ability in abundance, high fielding (a dying art of the current game), tenacious work rate in tracking back and providing support and not to mention popping in with match turning scores.

Still not convinced? look at Cavanagh's display in the 2008 Final - especially after the Hub was introduced to mark the bold and fearless Dara

Go to youtube and search Jack O Shea. Then look at the clips. You'll know everything you'll need to know about midfield play after that.

Seán Cavanagh although a brilliant player and probably one of the best players in the game today is not really a complete midfielder.

He is more a forward than anything and is excellent going forward and when he has the free role he can be unplayable. His high fielding ability isn't great but he dosen't need it to be because of the way Tyrone play.

As for complete midfielders I'd say John McDermott, Dara Ó Sé, Anthony Tohill and Kevin Walsh have been the best that I have seen.

It's not just about being big and strong and fielding spectacular ball. It's a nasty slog in midfield. You have to be like Brian Mullins, a win at all costs player. Such hunger and desire. The best competitor in football maybe. Sean Cavanagh has that same desire but I wouldn't pidgeon hole him by calling him a midfielder when in reality that man can play everywhere and excell.
