Scottish Celtic Fans do not support Ireland

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I have met several Celtic fans from Glasgow who support Ireland. Obviously the majority would support Scotland.

John Higgins the snooker player is one I believe - he follows Celtic and Ireland despite being Scottish born.

Whats your source for his supporting Ireland Slayer? I find it hard to believe as I remember Sky Sports talking to a few famous scottish and english sportsmen a few years back before the England Scotland WC play off in football and one of the scots was John Higgins.......

Some do and some dont

I follow Ireland regulary home and away and would agree that you don't meet many Ireland fans with scottish accents. There are far more 2nd\3rd generation fans from places like London, Birmingham, Manchester

I remember seeing him being interviewed on the BBC some time back talking about his love of Celtic but also saying he was a big fan of Ireland in international football. I could be wrong - had a look on youtube for the interview and no sign.

Indeed Paddy, to be truly Irish you have to support the British club Celtic. James Connolly for example wasn't truly Irish as he was a Hibs fan

Pomeroy u act like a two year old. Everything comes back to the same thing with u. I could start a tread about fishing and you'd somehow get it back to how u think all irish celtic supporters think their more irish cause they follow celtic. get a grip of urself and grow up

615829 'you support villa but are here calling irish celtic fans barstool fans'

I support Villa for a number of reasons but being Irish isn't one of them. Celtic fans here seem to support Celtic because they apparently have an Irish history and a large Irish connection. If that's your reason for supporting a club then there's other clubs that are more Irish than Celtic. Believe it or not most of them are actually in Ireland. Clubs over here were founded by Irishmen, have a large Irish connection and the added bonus of actually being in Ireland. So if you support a club simply because they're Irish why not actually support an Irish one. Just a thought

twist it whatever way you want. your an irish villa supporter, hence your a barstool supporter. how many games a year do you go to??? so most of the time your watching the highlights, or when the game is live on sky at home or in the pub (unless you watch them on the p2p networks). either way your a barstool supporter.

also could you give me a list of acceptable and unanacceptable rules for supporting a team. wheres the cut off point??? i didnt know being irish was an unacceptable reason for supporting a team with MASSIVE irish links, but yet your more important reasons for supporting villa are ......................???

I find it hard to comprehend how you can be a true fan of more than one team in the same sport.

how can you be a true fan of an english team in ireland? how can it possibly mean to you what it means to someone who was born in the stadiums shadow. if you were to go to a villa game and say you were a true fan from ireland, they'd laugh in your face and tell you to **** off and go and support your own league and leave THEIR teams alone

Alas, looking about me at people in the north of Ireland, that scenario is about right.

For many the most Irish thing you can do, such as dressing up on St Patrique's day, is to wear a Celtic jersey.

It really is sad.

I'd try to get to around 10 games a season, with work and all I've only managed to get to 8 this year and sadly I don't think I'll get again this season. Some great memories from this year, the 6 - 4 at home to Blackburn was the best soccer match I've ever been to. I've never been told to **** off by my fellow fans so that blows that argument out of the water, why would they abuse one of their own anyway? If being Irish is your reason for supporting a team then fair enough, each to their own. It isn't a factor at all for me and that's why I support an English club. If it is for you then why don't you actually support an Irish club? Celtic may have Irish links but there's clubs in Ireland that have bigger Irish links

Yea patrique and do u think proper celtic fans like myself are happy about that? It just gives people a reason to give out about celtic. And i think on paddys day people just like to wear something green and with a shamrock on it.

"why would they abuse one of their own anyway?"

oh so your from birmingham then?

i never said i supported celtic. and how do you know i dont support a local team?

you get to 6-8 matches. so you watch the rest at home. i think its then fair to say, you too are a barstool supporter.

I said around 10, I don't know where you get 6 - 8 from. I meant one of their own as in a Villa fan, I thought that much would be obvious. Aston is a relatively small area, are you honestly saying that only people from this area should support Aston Villa? Using your rationale anyone from Birmingham would be a glory hunter if they support Aston Villa as well because Birminghan City are the team they support. Anyone that lives a couple of miles outside Birmingham isn't a true fan as they are not from Aston. Think before you type man. And it's blatant from your posts you are a Celtic fan, you have the same uneducated view on Republicanism etc. that comes as standard for the Irish Celtic fans

I've met a good few be-hooped Glaswegians at Ireland matches (well, in the pub before and after), and they come regularly to support Ireland. Never really understood why the would support Ireland and not the country of their birth, and the country they grew up and lived in, but hey, live and let live

Pomeroy, ive asked this before and got no response. By the way u go on u make it out that there are no genuine Celtic supporters from Ireland. Is this ur honest opinion??? Or do u have blinkers on and only see the little toe rags that go around wearing Celtic jerseys just cause it's the thing to do?? Obviously there is a big element of that in Ireland but they are not true Celtic fans, they are the kind of people who only ever watch a Celtic game wen we're playing rangers and even then only really turn up to talk s**t. Can u not see that Ireland has a lot of genuine supporters who love the club for what it is, a football club.
