Gardai are continuing to question a 17-year-old this afternoon after seven men were stabbed in an attack in Drogheda earlier today.
One of the men is in a critical condition in hospital following the incident on West Street in the early hours of this morning.
It's reported that a young man with a knife was involved in a disturbance outside a pub on Laurence's Street at around half past twelve.
It's understood he then ran from the scene towards West Street and confronted a group of men aged between 16 and 38 before stabbing them.
The victims had no involvement in the original incident.
All seven were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in the town and one of the injured was subsequently transferred to the Mater Hospital in Dublin where he is in a critical condition.
Another man who was critically injured is now said to be in a stable condition at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
The other five suffered non-life threatening injuries and have been discharged.
The Mayor of Drogheda Michael O'Dowd says this is one of the most shocking and violent incidents in the town centre in the past decade.
He says its now time to introduce a zero tolerance approach to knife crime and an increasing knife culture. "The Gardai as a matter of urgency need to be given the tools to fight this and that includes metal detectors which are being used successfully by police forces in the UK to locate concealed knifes and blades.
Knife culture is not only a problem of knives: it is also a problem for society, with people feel increasingly endangered. We all need to work together to overcome this."
Absolutely sickening attack in the heart of Drogheda Town last night , knife crime is still a major problem in this country , Drogheda is not really a place known for incidents of these nature on a friday or saturday night .. but it just shows you cant go anywhere nowadays without the risk of being the victim of a vicious attack attack, its hard to believe a 17 year old could be involved and is being questioned by police about the incident

You see this is exactly the sort of reason we need capital punishment in this country. The people carrying out these attacks on innocent civilians fully deserve to hang at the end of a rope. I've gone on a rant several times before about these sort of issues, and i wont do it again, but what I will say is, as long as our justice system favours the criminals, our streets will never be safe. And of course its left wing influenced EU legislation which is at the root of our poor stance on crime.

Woah lads! Capital punishment does not work. It is state sanctioned murder.
From the sound of this attack I would not be surprised if it came out that the lad was on a trip or suffering from schizophrenia or psychosis or something. This is why Headshop stuff is so dangerous. I know a few lads that tried it recently, they said it was terrifying, "never again"

Not trying to be funny here but everytime I turn RTE News on there seems to be ANOTHER shooting, stabbing, assault, robbery, rape etc in the South. It has become a dangerous place and I keep hearing from family and friends there that it is getting out of control. The gaurds seem to have lost the war and the criminals know it. Drugs I believe are the root cause of most of this violence and crime. I am not saying that there are no drugs in the North but there is most definately not the same problems with drugs here. I think there is a less tolerant attitude in the North towards drugs and whether people disagree or condemn the actions of paramiltaries and vigilantes in the North there IS a lot of support for their methods in dealing with drugs dealers and anti social activities. That is a fact even if the Mods refuse to print this.

Terrible - Its the second random stabbing in Drogheda in the last few weeks. Its an adult crime so lets hope he's not just sent to Loughlin house or Mosney to serve a six month sentenance as he is just 17.

Yeah, it must be the head shops. Before the head shops opened in Ireland there wasn't a single solitary case of random violence in the history of the state.

Alcohol plays a huge part in many serious assaults, murders, rapes, etc. Maybe we should make it illegal too, it would give the gangs another valuable source of income.

That is true nocky. I don't know what you do about. Closing Head shops is not actually the answer in my opinion, but some of the stuff there selling is dangerous. The possibility that this was drug related came in to my head when I was talking to my friend.

As far as I can tell (from media friends etc..) it was just alcohol, no drugs involved.
