Wud i be right in saying cooney had 5 all stars by 25, played another 9 years and got no all star in those 9 years, sorry but ollie canning has been much more consistant than that and on a much worse team. Best of modern era are,

Joe Canning
John Connolly
Ollie Canning
Joe Cooney (Take away club hurling - non existant for the county from 1990 on)
Kevin Broderick (Injuries hampered what could have been, nearly beat us in 2001 on his own)
Eanna Ryan
Iggy Clarke

Not having a dig at Galway but cant even make a top 10 because ye have so few hurlers of the class of all time greats, all the above are. Cooney at his best Vs Canning at his best, Canning without a doubt but both are geniuses.

Joe Cooney non existant for county from 1990 on... WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT... I watched him come off the bench in 1999 when he was pushing 40 and was able to teach the Clare lads a lesson.. He has been Galways greatest patron of last Century and I would go so far as to say he would have been pushing one of Irelands greatest ever

joe cooney, joe canning, michael coleman and liam burke if only they were mid field partners through the 90s, pete finnerty, iggy clarke, tony keady, gerry mac, could go on and on but it always comes back to the 2 joes and cooney is the master canning the heir to the throne

NO, came off the bench and played well in 1999 at nearly 40 (34, get your facts right, 1 year older than ollie canning is now and he is a current all star). no doubt Cooney was a genius but no all star from 1990 on, the greatest ever do not go 9 years without an all star, it never happened shefflin or ollie canning, wont happen walsh, kelly or Canning. My God who mentioned Liam Burke, thats laughable to say an all time great - no all star either. Tipps best hurler. Jimmy Doyle is from Thurles, thats in Tipp. Kelly might take that crown yet though, hopefully he wont go 9 years without an all star.

Dire galway teams, what can ya say for ollie canning so? Cooney played in the greatest era ever in Galway. Ollie Canning pulled out 4 all stars from far worse teams and might yet equal Cooney. Nobody seems to be able to answer why he got no all star from 25 on? At his best not denying as good as any of them (bar Canning at his best) but did not do it for long enough.
