Think I might be the first one but yes I do think that they have a chance. Last year they looked impressive until Meath beat them. Meath got a few decision on the day and May had lost their entire full foward line by the end of the game.

This year their League form is good. If they win the League and then win Connacht they may just start to believe. All of Mayo's All Ireland appearances have come on the back of a brilliant one-off performances (Kerry in 96, Tyrone in 04, Dublin in 06), not building form and confidence over time. If Mayo arrive in August or September on the back of a League and Connacht title plus some solid performances in the All Ireland series, they may just start to believe. The worst thing that could happen for them this year is that Sligo and/or Roscommon roll over and let Mayo tickle their bellies like last year and I can't see Sligo doing that at home. they will need at least two tough games in Connacht.

If you compare Mayo to the likes of Meath or Monaghan it`s like comparing Arsenal to Bolton. Arsenal might have the best team in the league with the most gifted of players, play beautiful football but do they win much? Not really. Perhaps it might be the year where the best team actually wins it. We will see.

Thats a bit rich. What have Kilkenny footballers ever done?

Dont really think Mayo have a chance. Good footballers, nice to watch, just dont have the edge that champs have.

Don't see it. Connacht teams are way of the mark come championship time. Kerry again, with the only real challenge coming from Cork.

Forget Kerry this year. More than likely Cork although they had the best team last year and couldn't do it. The usual suspects will be in the shake up no doubt and my dark horse would be Down.

Maybe if they were able to avoid Kerry in the draw, then there's a chance. As is the case with some other counties, Mayo fall short when playing Kerry in Croke Park in the Champo. I would put them in the second tier of possible winners after the likes of Cork, Tyrone, Kerry and Dublin.

The difference between Mayo and the teams you mentioned was that they were full of men with substance, no room for premandonnas on those teams. Thats were Mayo are different, you have guys like the Mort !!!. I lived in Galway for a couple years way back, I couldnt hack listening to the Mayo folk constantly going on about their domestic game, they really put their players on a pedestal even though they dont deserve to be there.

I would be inclined to shout for anyone but Mayo (or maybe I just dont like Mayo folk) going off the main point a bit!

599014 I was just saying to a friend today that i would love to see Mayo win Sam...What they have done to keep Mayo close to the top table is remarkable..Many counties would have dissapeared of the radar after suffering so much.....Im sure your day will come very soon.....

Think they've the players capabale of winning it but with a huge mental obstacle in their way it may be a bridge too far.

I don't see why Mayo wouldn't have as good a chance as anyone. I know people will still be of the mindset that Kerry are favorites but it will take some performance for them to win it this year. Not only because its another back to back but they've lost some very big names. Just my opinion now but I for one thought Kerry were very lucky to win the AI this year and I think experience and other teams lack of experience got them over the line last year. Had Sligo scored that penalty we would have had a different summer. But thats another case of should have and would haves.
Cork would be the main chasers and you can never write off Tyrone. But I genuinely do think Mayo have enough to get them to the final. Their defence is still a bit light and loose but they've got some very good forwards and an excellent midfield. I give them every chance of being contenders. Mind you, should they fail in this years bid, I think some serious questions will be asked of O'Mahony.

I put a post on this on the other joke thread about ''how many points Mayo would win the all-ireland by''. They have a great chance of reaching quarter-finals, thereafter they are capable of a big performance. I believe they can win all-ireland as long as they overcome their own mental short-comings. Open championship this year.

clarefootball92. To you and everyone else that are not only slating Mayo football but Mayo people too, you're support for Mayo is neither wanted nor needed but your personal attack on Mayo people in general must stem from either jealousy or a case of "i wish i was from Mayo", either way it's not bothering Mayo people what you and others think of us, we are very comfortable and proud of where were from.
I'll go through this with all you ignorant folk again. Mayo not won sam since 51. Nobody in Mayo shouts about winning AIs. We will improve on last year. We have been producing fine footballers for years.Over the last twenty years we have sustained a place in the top 6/7 at least. We have u-21 ai in the bag from 06, couple of good minor teams last few years along with a couple of exp players like the morts and Dillon, why should we be negative? When you(clare92) have a go at C. Mort, like a lot of people, you see his almost arrogant cocky type characteristics of his personality, you're blinded by this while assessing his football ability. If he were an unassuming type of person you would regard him as a top class forward that just lacks consistency, which is the truth. He was top scorer in Ireland in 06(i think), he is top forward in Mayo most years.

I'd love to see them do it. I want to see a team emerge other than Cork, Tyrone and Kerry, (no offence to any of the 3 teams) to win it. I know it's up to all the other counties to step up and compete, but I'd just like to see a newish name on Sam this September. Sure why not Mayo - God knows they've suffered long enough!
