i think tommy is jelous of mansy,, i thought it was a rule that the keeper couldnt put the ball out play, just the men out field.. maybe im wrong , but i rem people saying that at the mon v cork game when cork keeper was waiting at the end to put ball out, then we got side line ball......

An utterly frustrating result yesterday, caused by basic errors that seemingly will never go away. Watching Monaghan is like that whack-the-gopher game, you beat down one problem and another rears its head. The turning points were:
Duffys kickout- we all knew the inevitable stupid goal was coming-it always does. SD would have forced the referee's hand by kicking for touch, go in 5 points up against what was a brittle Mayo at that stage. Most tuned-in observers were urging him to do just that- he didn't.
C Hanratty- Did ok on suitable ball early on, but that lame kick into the keepers hands (when monaghan were still very much in the hunt) resulted in a point at the other end.
Woods- What was his role when he came on? Should have been introduced at the point McElroy was withdrawn, to win what seemed like an endless stream of hopeful long punting to FF
V Corey- Not fit enough yet to carry the ball through contact and coughed up easy possession (2nd goal resulted).
Freeman- At centre back???
Finlay- obviously struggling with injury and his immobility coincided with a real reversal at midfield. This underlines Banty's lack of faith in any other midfield panel members. He could have carried Finlay for frees further forward and brought someone into MF

On another note, that was a particularly weak refereeing display. For 55 minutes he gave both teams frees for minimal contact at tackling, then for the last 15 he sanctioned muggings.

"Completly agree cmx. I sat in castlebar yest in frustration as i could see our lead slippin and slipping away and what does banty do? Put on V Corey. Hanratty is going to have to be dropped from panel in my opinion. I would be the very one to look on the positives but we all have to face facts, we are heading for div 2.

It also seems as if Jap is starting to get frustrated, as if he is sick of carrying the team on his shoulders. Anotherwords that he has to do everything. Hope that is cut out sooner rather than later.

MuineachanAbu,

Looks to me like you're calling for Banty's head

There always seems to be some sort of gamplan adopted by the management to ''outwit'' the opposition i.e. moving Tommy Freeman out. Every game we seem to have some sort of a nonsense tactic. Why can't we just go 15 on 15 and try to win the game with that.

Once again goals proved our downfall. This has happened many times in the past 3 or 4 years.

Banty should have went last year!! Anyway thats beside the point!! Hughes was poor,, his man scored 1.1??!! The goal before halftime was a killer and i was just sickined at halftime! Mc Adam or hanratty isn county standard!! Freeman isn the player he was!! Midfield is a problem as lennon wont have any games under his belt for championship!! Gollogly is good work horse but nothing ever comes off him like a score or 2?!! We dont have the players for division 1 or strenght in depth!!

the way some posters here are going on about refs/time/etc you would swear this was an important c'ship game.
look ye did well. we were outplayed for most of the game but i kindof expected mayo to come back.
but judging by some of the monaghan comments here am i right in thinking this was year cup final ?
i hope not.
the fact that mayo are top of div 1 means very little to me.

> The ref had nothing to do with the result, but as a general comment his decision making was strange

> The reason for so many posts is not the import of the fixture itself but rather the manner in which Monaghan contrived to lose their control of the game. Fair enough you don't have good reason to be aware of this, but an infuriating tendency to leak dumb goals has stifled this team's progress

Some Monaghan posters are beginning to sound like some of the more pessimistic of the Mayo crowd. Any reasonable analysis of yesterdays game would have to conclude that Monaghan were the better team and were extremely unlucky to lose. From my point of view seeing a Mayo team winning a game against the run of play is a welcome change.

601580 Monaghan Exile u sum up everything that is wrong with the attitude-

'we showed that are able to play a decent game of football & we can look forward to perhaps a reasonable championship campaign.'

Nothing like settling for mediocrity.

I look forward to a 'reasonable championship campaign'

so if we win 1 or 2 games we should have a party???reminds me of the farce that was Ireland bein knocked out of the World Cup in 2002 by Spain in the second round. They were greated with an open top bus through Dublin and a packed reception in the Phoenix Park.laughable

I have tried hard to find the word mediocrity anywhere in my post, no matter how often I read it.
I agree with you about this attitude of "morale victory" goes over the top.
So what is a reasonable championship campaign. Maybe it could mean winning a first Ulster title in 22 years! I happen to believe we have a great chance this year of doing so!.......... Then maybe we could start dreaming of even bigger glory!
So I take it you want Monaghan folk to start "shouting" that we are going to win the All-Ireland! or whats your take on it ? ........ Even Kerry folk who have more all-Irelands than the combined total of 27 or 28 counties added together generally d'ont go around claiming they WILL win the next one!

i am not saying we should go shouting about what we're gonna do etc. and i know u didnt use the word 'mediocrity' but it is the general attitude throughout the county that if we win one or two games a year then it has been a great year i.e settling for mediocrity.this attitude throughout the county is why we'll never progress.patting fellas on the back for 'tryin' and 'givin 100%'.patronisin, sub-standard, second-rate attitude.to be more blunt and harsh as they may sound it is the attitude of losers.the truth needs to be told instead of constantly hidin behind the 'bad luck' story.100% effort doesnt cut it any more.its not good enough.just put the bloody ball over the bar when we have it and if we're in trouble in the back line kick it out of play.if we followed these basics we could make progress.frustration frustration frustration

Completely agree with an bhoth15, its the basics that get us every time. Anytime a team runs at us I'm waiting on the ball to hit the back of our net. We're very shakey under the high ball and we've got into a very bad habit of passing the ball across the back line, losing it by overplaying it and conceding ridiculous frees from close range. Then at the other end we hoof the ball forward and hope it reaches one of our players. Why not adopt a short passing play to the forwards that way we might penetrate better??
