RTEs coverage of weaker counties

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Agree with the post and the sentiment of those who responded - Especially the point that RTE allocate too much of their precious coverage time to second rate pundits, who IMO in the main are more focused on etching out a career for themselves and trying to establish a Z listed celebrity status rather than giving an insightful analysis of any game.
Just one additional point to make - I was watching the News at 6pm on RTE and they decided to show all the main points of the Galway V Tyrone game which was OK, but in so doing did not then have the time to even list or show on screen the results from all the other divisions.
No vested interest on my part here as Monaghan's result was listed as part of the Div 1 sequence (for one year only probably) but like all other GAA followers, I like to cast my eye over the rest of the results too to see if how they went and if any surprises stick out.

Not good enough !

People want to see the best teams perform on tv not the weaker counties.
Thats just the way it is.
Carlovia - would you have wanted to watch the Derry vs Armagh hurling match on sunday?

We all want to see more games on telly but all this talk about "promoting our games" and "they are promoting rugby and soccer" is complete and utter BS!

It's all about supply and demand people! Do you think RTE executives sit around a table and say: what can we do to promote rugby or soccer, hurling etc. Personally I'd love to see handball on the telly but who's gonna watch it?

The fact that 80% of LOI Division 1 teams are from the Pale keeps costs down for RTE making it financially viable to put together MNS even though the average attendance at a LOI game is probably less than half that of an NFL game. It obviously isn't financially viable for them to send cameras to NFL/NHL games.

To be fair they give a lot of coverage to Cork and Tipp hurling so there are certain weaker counties that do get on the TV.

listen don't worry about it lads...at least ye can knock lumps out of each other off the ball and as long as the ref doesn't see you, you can get off scot free without the cccc getting their grubby hands on the video, then hounding the ref to hannd out red cards and ending up with half a team come the next match...

Lads and lassies forget about getting cameras to cover games, what about the barefaced cheek to give say Div 3 results and not then show how the Effin table is as a consequence of those results. That is ridiculous.Divison 1 and 2 get the rundown but Div 3 and 4 do not. They just say "and in Div 3 there were wins for Blah blah blah".The same on Aertel in relation to previews. They preview Divs 1 and 2.Nothing about 3 and 4.Who cares eh?Some counties are more equal than others.
Nobody wanted to ring the Carlow hurling manager before last weeks game but they rang the Phone off the hook yesterday because they won.He should have told them where to go.I know I would have.

I agree with bumpernut, the GAA don't appear to want the league to be popular, it is as if they are afraid that if the league gets more popular then the championship might suffer, i go to see Louth every weekend but if i wasn't a supporter i wouldn't even know they where playing, how will we ever get new supporters if people don't even know the games are on. Outside our home ground in Drogheda we have a huge billboard and i don't think it has ever been used to promote an up coming game. Our support last Sunday was the worst i have ever seen even though we were having a decent season up until then and it was the nicest day of the year so far.. As for RTE i think the GAA should tell them if they want first choice for championship football which they always have then they have to show one live league game every week for the duration of the league, if RTE aren't interested then sell the whole year as a package to setanta who actually will show a league game and leave RTE with just their crappy highlights show for the summer.

Get over it, RTE give the majority of people what they want to see and more over they run on a tight budget especially nowadays.

Joe Joe your talking rubbish, RTE show league of ireland games with one or two thousand at them, surely if people where interested then more would go to the game. It's has nothing to do with what the people want, sadly that's not how RTE operate.

Padraic Duffy has said that the GAA want to see a move away from games being shown on pay-per-view. But who else is going to show the games? RTE don't seem interested. TG4 already go to considerable lengths to show our games. If it wasn't for Setanta - who generally screen two live games on the Saturday nights - there would be far less for the GAA fan to watch. So whats the alternatives? I'd love to see a devoted GAA channel but I don't think the audience would be big enough

The show the highlights of the two matches setanta show on
a saturday night and then the highlights of the live and deffered

Well, i suppose there's no need to imagine it, that's what the they did, absolutely no promotion of the league games and at the same time playing them on the same evening that another sport is using croke park as a showcase.

Do you obviously feel RTE should promote GAA while the the GAA themselves don"t bother?

What most GAA followers find irritating is that RTE seems to have no bother promoting rugby. We are taxpayers too. RTE is funded by the taxpayer. If they can find time and go to the expense of sending cameras plus studio analysis of an U20 rugby international in Athlone they can surely equally send cameras to all the Div 1 and 2 county matches. The treatment of any rugby announcement e.g. the English team is announced or B O'Driscoll has a sore shoulder is always accompanied by film of a few tries. what is that but blatent promotion. This contrasts with the treatment of GAA news when it is covered e.g. yesterday the announcement that D Henry is the new Dublin captain was accompanied by footage of him warming up before a match showing mostly the back of his head and then when he turned it showed him spitting. What kind of promotion is that? Someone in the sports Dept. in RTE is making choices on what footage to show and they seem to be always positive about one sport and negative about another.
