More people are killed by falling coconuts than sharks, be careful. This was posted by D'horse (do ye have any figures for this). Matt Cooper gave a vital statistic on his radio programme the other day. 388 are killed in car accidents in ireland while over 1000 were killed by accidents involving their stairs... yes stairs. Anyone else any statistics......

You are more likely to die in the hour leading up to the lotto results than to win the lotto itself.

If you put 23 randon people in a room there is more than a 50% probability that 2 have the same birthday.

rua nua I find that extraordinary. Can u give a mathematical breakdown of how this is arrived at. I've tried to figure it out and can't. p.s. Mathematics is not my strong point.

Once you have 183 possible pairs it should be 50% but you need more because some pairs are ruled out because they have the same birthday
so you need 253 pairs 23 x 22/ 2

Hope this answers yer question:

Mathematics has always been a brainchild to so many things that have evolved in life, its a under statement that some mathematic calculations lead to amazing combinations in its own.

Well with amazing i do mean that they are amazing combinations used, the Fibonacci series is one of them, but how many such series do exist do we even know about them, here are few series which lead to an amazing amount of curiosity what numbers can do.

I found this through CuriousMath just wondering how many such combinations do exist, your inputs are always welcome, but still have a look at some amazing combinations numbers can perform.

3 x 37 = 111 and 1 + 1 + 1 = 3
6 x 37 = 222 and 2 + 2 + 2 = 6
9 x 37 = 333 and 3 + 3 + 3 = 9
12 x 37 = 444 and 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
15 x 37 = 555 and 5 + 5 + 5 = 15
18 x 37 = 666 and 6 + 6 + 6 = 18
21 x 37 = 777 and 7 + 7 + 7 = 21
24 x 37 = 888 and 8 + 8 + 8 = 24
27 x 37 = 999 and 9 + 9 + 9 = 27

1 x 1 = 1
11 x 11 = 121
111 x 111 = 12321
1111 x 1111 = 1234321
11111 x 11111 = 123454321
111111 x 111111 = 12345654321
1111111 x 1111111 = 1234567654321
11111111 x 11111111 = 123456787654321
111111111 x 111111111 = 12345678987654321

1 x 9 + 2 = 11
12 x 9 + 3 = 111
123 x 9 + 4 = 1111
1234 x 9 + 5 = 11111
12345 x 9 + 6 = 111111
123456 x 9 + 7 = 1111111
1234567 x 9 + 8 = 11111111
12345678 x 9 + 9 = 111111111
123456789 x 9 +10 = 1111111111

9 x 9 + 7 = 88
98 x 9 + 6 = 888
987 x 9 + 5 = 8888
9876 x 9 + 4 = 88888
98765 x 9 + 3 = 888888
987654 x 9 + 2 = 8888888
9876543 x 9 + 1 = 88888888
98765432 x 9 + 0 = 888888888

1 x 8 + 1 = 9
12 x 8 + 2 = 98
123 x 8 + 3 = 987
1234 x 8 + 4 = 9876
12345 x 8 + 5 = 98765
123456 x 8 + 6 = 987654
1234567 x 8 + 7 = 9876543
12345678 x 8 + 8 = 98765432
123456789 x 8 + 9 = 987654321

7 x 7 = 49
67 x 67 = 4489
667 x 667 = 444889
6667 x 6667 = 44448889
66667 x 66667 = 4444488889
666667 x 666667 = 444444888889
6666667 x 6666667 = 44444448888889

and so on

4 x 4 = 16
34 x 34 = 1156
334 x 334 = 111556
3334 x 3334 = 11115556
33334 x 33334 = 1111155556

50.7% chance I believe.

If you put 57 random people in a room, there is 99% probability that 2 have the same birthday.

Loan sharks are not included in the figures. i have no figures and i doubt if anyone has, i was merely trying to calm Orlath in the light of some eejit in the USA being killed by a whale.

However you might be interested to know that in 1947 more peole were killed in the USA by donkies than civilian air crashes

Tiger shark embroyos fight each other in their mother's womb. The survivor is born.

How spooky are the following facts!!!
11 has become a very interesting number. It could be a forced coincidence, but in any case the following is very interesting. Have a read and decide for yourself:
1) New York City has 11 letters
2) Afghanistan has 11 letters.
3) Ramsin Yuseb (The terrorist who threatened the Twin Towers in 1993) has 11 letters.
4) George W Bush has 11 letters.

This could be a mere coincidence.... could it be true???? Now here is what is interesting.
1) New York is the state 11.
2) The first plane crashing against the Twin Towers was flight no 11.
3) Flight 11 was carrying 92 passengers. 9 + 2 = 11
4) Flight 77 which also hit Twin Towers, was carrying 65 passengers. Add this 6+5 = 11
5) The tragedy was on September 11, or 9/11 as it is now known, 9 + 1 + 1 = 11
6) The date is equal to the emergency number 911. Adding 9+1+1+= 11.

Now this is very upsetting.
1) The total number of victims inside the planes was 254. 2 + 5 + 4 = 11
2) The day September 11 is day number 254 of the calendar year. Again 2 + 5 + 4 + = 11. Leaving 111 days left in the year.
3) The tragedy of 3/11/2004 in Madrid also adds up to 3 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 4 = 11.
4) The tragedy of Madrid happened 911 days after the Twin Towers.

Spooky. Read on.
This is really eerie. This is something to think about! Since America is typically represented by an Eagle. Saddam and Bin laden should have read up on their Muslim passages... The following verse is taken from the Quran, (The Islamic bible) Quran. (9.11) For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced: for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah and there was peace.

Note the verse number...
Now got to Microsoft word and do the following!!!
1. Open up word.
2. Type in capitals Q33 NY. This is the flight number of the first plane to hit one of the towers.
3. Highlight the Q33 NY.
4. Change the font size to 48.
Then change the actual font to WINGDINGS

____________
Yes but what cofuses most people is that its not 23 people its 253 possible pairs. Though as they are not mutually exclusive the probabilty reduces to 183/365

the opposite works in a lotto if you have 23 Different balls in a lotto the odds of guessing two are 253/1 because they are mutually exclusive

In fact to have a 100% probability you would need 367 people to rule out the remote risk that one was born on every day of the year and that one was born in a leap year so it is only the 367th person that ensures 100% certainty of a match.
