My hometown Ballyhaunis has one of the best cricket clubs in the country made up almost entirely of the local Pakistani community which is there more than 30 years because of the, once, Halal meat factory. Many Pakistani's have played underage for Mayo and won county championships. Not the highest standard of hurling granted but Keith Higgins, one of the country's best known dual star plays for us. I'd say ye could bait one of those cricket balls right out of the stadium with a hurley, then go and flatten the bowler, so that would make you even better than the real cricket players, no? realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8746 - 10/08/2013 15:47:35 1458172 Link 0 |
Higgins is a fine hurler. I'd imagine he would be good at whatever sport he turned his hand to. hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 10/08/2013 17:51:54 1458282 Link 0 |

A fine hurler indeed Hurlingdub. His Dad is from Galway and rumour has it Galway wanted him to hurl with them but he told them he's a Mayo man! GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7936 - 11/08/2013 09:26:50 1458444 Link 0 |
Was talking to a Kiwi cricket coach and he reckons Irish kids who hurl are natural cricketers and if they were caught at 11/12 years of age after hurling for 4 years they would naturally progress like guys who played cricket from a young age. Same skill set really. JayP (Dublin) - Posts: 1772 - 11/08/2013 11:32:08 1458494 Link 0 |

I was 7 years old when I came to England, from Kilkenny, in the early 1960's. I was about 8 or 9 when I first played a proper game of cricket, albeit in the school playground, but with real wickets, bats and ball. When I batted I was hitting the ball all over the place. The teacher taking the game suggested to me that I should play with the boys a year above me. I put my prowess down to my excellent hand-eye coordination derived from my regular playing of hurling from an early age. Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2740 - 11/08/2013 18:22:51 1458957 Link 0 |
Hurling definitely helps when playing cricket. I started playing cricket 3 years ago. Picked it up when I was 28 (Wish I discovered it years ago). I'm now playing 1st team cricket for my club in the Leinster league. However it's not a straight forward transition. I have had to work hard on being able to defend and play the ball straight as opposed to just swinging cross ways like a lunatic. Im well known in my club for playing a sweep shot which has a similar action to a side line cut. Also, while we're on the subject, I found that being a goalkeeper in football helps a lot when it comes to being a wicket keeper in cricket.
