576732 To me they are probably the only team that could surprise the usual crew this year.

I have to say that although it's a good bit away yet I'm looking forward to this match. Some very interesting duals to look out for. Neil McGee and Coulter, Lacey and McComiskey, Cassidy and Clarke etc.

If we can get good early ball into Murphy and McFadden I don;t think you're FB line is up to much. Could be the winning of the game there.

Not that much really between all the counties in Ulster with the exception of Tyrone who I believe still to be a fair distance ahead of the pack. I think the gap is pretty narrow on any given day between the rest. I think I can now even include my own county in this chasing pack. So I see the Donegal v Down game coming down to home advantage. I cannot see Donegal allow what happened them last year to be repeated.

So you Ulster folk keep saying, yet Armagh and Tyrone and the only ones to seem to be able to win it.

Well said paddy. Im sick to the teeth of the rest of the ulster counties talking like the whole province is responsible for tyrone and armaghs success. Then we hear every year how competitive the Ulster Championship is, yet nobody bar tyrone or armagh have won the thing in 10 years. Quit hanging on to our tails and try to do something yourselves. Pack of moochers!!

Thank you. Was that so hard? Now if I could get an apology from a representative from the rest of the ulster counties i would be happy.

Basically, have Down any chance of winning Ulster this year? I think they look tasty at 10s
--------------------------------------------------------------
Hadn't checked - Excellent value - Just backed them - Thank you.

Monaghan 2nd favorites at 11/2 - Ridiculous ! - ROI have a better chance of winning the World Cup - Hope I'm wrong but I don't think so.

I think you might be right, full back has been our weakness for a while now. So far this season they have been well tightened up but yet to be properly tested. The line ups for the league game v Donegal should be interesting.

AS far as the Ulster Championship goes, we would all like to win it, but would be quite happy to make progress via the back door system if knocked out of the Ulster Champ. I dont think Tyrone were disappointed with their All Ireland win when they came thru the back door!

Tyrone & Armagh dominated Ulster between 1999 and 2009 because of a wealth of talent in that period, whereas the rest of us have struggled. Tyrone converted their success into 3 All Irelands, with Armagh getting 1.

Look at the previous 10 years (1989 to 1998): Tyrone (3 times), Donegal, Down & Derry (twice each), Cavan & Monaghan (once each). Down, Donegal & Derry brought back Sam 4 times between them. Tyrone were unlucky in 1995.

Who knows what 2010 holds? Antrim? Down? Derry? Fingers crossed it's Down.

Good post - to those who argue about Ulster just being about Tyrone and Armagh. A twenty year period isn't that big a timespan in the scheme of things. You mention Donegal, Derry, Down, Tyrone, Armagh in your post. Cavan's win in 97 and the odd burst from Fermanagh could be mentioned also. Add to that Antrim's recent resurgence and not forgetting Monaghan, who can give any team in Ireland a good game and I suppose the obvious conclusion is that Ulster football just isn't that competitive really....

Yes, Antrim and Fermanagh have been great in the last 2 years. Cavan's win in 1997 was a good one under Martin McHugh. Derry, Donegal & Monaghan deserved more success from their Ulster final appearances.

Ulster's competitiveness has not produced a variety of Ulster title winners between 2000 and 2009 but a look at most 10 year periods before that shows that it was definitely a unique thing to have 2 teams winning all the titles.

Last nights result dampened down the expectations I guess. Maybe I was a little premature

Thankfully Gaelic is very unpredictable. The league doesn't tell us much. And early form in the championship can be misleading (Tyrone '05 and Kerry '09). I know I'm biased but I think Tyrone will win Ulster with Down, Donegal, or Derry being possible problems. Antrim will be tricky for any county. Can't wait for it to start.
