Kilkenny minor footballers beat Longford in the league. Should Longford give up as well?

Don't fear being beat? Then how come they pulled out of the Leinster Minor Championship? Also, why didn't they participate in the national league from 2000-2007?? Too good for the opposition?!

Pity indeed! I see my leitrim counterpart, and i myself, have great experience in great dual counties, the gulf in class in division 4 is something that worries everyone and their dog in clare, im sure its the same story in leitrim, except maybe with cats instead of dogs! no pun intended!

Counties with large populations , such as Cork , Galway and Dublin can compete at the highest level in both hurling and football. Kilkenny is a relatively small County and just dosen't have the manpower for both codes. However, Kilkenny is the top Hurling County of all time, going for 5 in a row this year, and that's a position every other County would like to be in.

Oricelt, fair enough point. However, I disagree. There is another county called Offaly b(which is a lot smaller than Kilkenny), and lets be fair they have fared out pretty well in both codes. Now I know that there are football and hurling areas in all counties you mentioned but the fact is there is a football bord in Kilkenny and their almost useless. Last night James Stephens gave a walk over to Railyard. JS are the biggest club in Kilkenny and yet they could not get 15 to field a team. I remember a time when Kilkenny were competitive at least. Pulling out of the Leinster minor football championship (what a joke). Those involved at promoting football in the county should be ashamed of them selves. Yet they will say what more can they do. They can do a lot more. Promote it in the schools. Get into clubs. Re-organised the county championships. Surely in a county like Kilkenny clubs can be joined up similar to Galmoy and Windgap in underage hurling to play at a higher standard. If football is to ghet better it must come from withon the county and not outside. However that ambition and drive is not there.

A lot of young lads in Kilkenny see the Senior Team in Hurling doing so well that they will want to play the sport of their hero's.

The drive is just not there from underage I would say.

This obsession with Kilkenny football is a strange affliction. Does it come with spots or green eyes? And is there a cure?

I am not persuaded it has anything to do with concern for the game. After all there are 31 other counties on Hoganstand's website and none of them seem to merit such attention. 9 of these counties, some with much bigger populations than Kilkenny, have never won a senior All Ireland in either code. Of the 32 counties, 13 have never won a senior football final; 20 have never won a senior hurling final and are never likely to, unless the game gets more support. Many counties seem to contribute little to either code. But that is their choice and they shouldn't be coerced.

Kilkenny has strong traditions in hurling and handball especially. Football was once more popular, but the game has changed a lot in the past 20 years or so and with it the levels of skill. The present game is a constant maul and the hand pass is suspect. I feel sorry for referees trying their best to put some shape on the game and getting so much abuse for their efforts. It is not a pleasant spectacle.

Hurling is a much more difficult game to play and requires a far greater range of skills. In a county where it is played so widely the only real competition in football is likely to come from soccer. There are probably more Man United supporters in Ireland than support any of our county teams. However football can reinvent itself and with more imagination could have far wider appeal. Watching Mick O'Connell and Kerry play football was magic for me as a youngster. They earned their place as kingpins of the game.

Perhaps your correspondents could make some suggestions as to how football could be made more attractive and playable, and hurling more accessible.

Yours, KKlon

There are underage leagues and champ's in football from u14 up. There are also development squads from u14 up. These only last a few weeks in the year.
Clubs don't really train. Most people are interested in playing but nobody organises training. I can think of several times coming up to a big football match in underage, we would have a training session during the week. half the session was football and the other half hurling. Hurling was months away.
Many schools are more organised than clubs and give players a chance. There are many Leinster schools football medals in Kilkenny. In every grade.
The county team trainings are a joke. Numbers are regularly in single figures, because the traionings are nothing like what the hurling clubs do.
If a player has a choice of county football training or club hurling training in any other county, they choose county.
In Kilkenny, because the drills, level of coaching, organisation and speed of moving from one thing to the next is so backward, players just see no point in attending.
But one thing is for sure , and some results have proved this, a trained Kilkenny underage team, could beat half the teams in Leinster

No comments on the junior footballers putting up a decent performance against Meath. Oh i forgot, its only when you want to have bash at us because we are so successful at hurling and handball.

Why do people bother with this over and over again…….Kilkenny put as much effort into football as Leitrim/Cavan/Monaghan put into hurling…….Meath Minors played the Kilkenny minors and won by 44 points if the Kilkenny minors played the Leitrim minors or Louth minors in hurling what would the outcome be? In fact they would not be let play each other.
Kilkenny are in division 4 of the national football league which last year included Sligo and Antrim (both only lost to Kerry by a few points) and this year Limerick (who should have won the Munster championship in 2009) not to mention Wicklow q/f's last year, these teams are near professional in their approach to the game.
Kilkenny are doing their best and have huge hurdles to climb but a least they are trying , when they weren't in the league other counties complained and now they are in the league other counties complain we loose by to much.
Iam sure that everyone that is on this site complaining about the state of football in Kilkenny is also on the Tyrone site complaining about their lack of progress in their hurling ….to me it sounds like sour grapes……..
Kilkenny have all their eggs in one basket and with their success it would be very hard for this to change overnight…..
Kilkenny has a small population (80k) and to be competing and excelling in most cases on a national level in any code is an achievement.

Sorry to be bringing this up again, but it could hardly be ignored. As I've mentioned here before, your county board has a hell of a lot to answer for. How can they let the KK footballers become so bad? This year is even worse than last year - let's look at it. 3 games played. A total of 1-3 scored, and no score put up against Leitrim.

When you came back to the National League in 2008, it was a good thing, and you had some good results that year, finishing above London. I dont know what's happened since, but really, if youre going to neglect football so horribly, then just stop playing, youre only making idiots of yourselves.

Before anyone starts going on about KK being the first team in modern GAA to post no scores in an inter county match, Carlow did the same thing against Cork in 1992, so those reports are inaccurate.
