570766 I read in the Indo today that Trap would be willing to change his famed defensive system to accomodate James McCarthy if he fulfills his potential. So why couldn't he do the same for Andy Reid who is a proven Premiership player?
Andy Reid wasn't a proven premiership player at the time he was dropped. Should more than likely be in the squad alright (although injured), but not worth all this hassle. Trappatoni and his players should not be defined by Andy Reid. He is definitely not worth changing the entire system for. McCarthy isn't yet either but the key is potential.
I'm sure you'll agree that there is more to Irish football than whether Andy Reid is on the bench or not.
I don't have any sympathy for the IFA anyway. The Irish rugby team use Ireland's Call as their national anthem, but the IFA still use GSTQ. Neil Lennon was treated disgracefully by the "fans", so I can understand why players from a nationalist background would choose to play for us (not to mention we have a far better chance of actually qualifying for major tournaments).
Andy Reid has done far more this season than James McCarthy has Breffni. He was a well established in-form premiership player but Trap still didn't select him, yet he selected Liam Miller (who was without a club), Martin Rowlands, Liam Lawrence etc. Due to his unfortunate injury we won't know until the Paraguay and Algeria games whether Trap has got over his vindictiveness and will select him again.
The Ward omission still makes no sense either, Trap clearly hasn't seen enough of him but mustn't rate him. He is surely our best option at leftback at this stage, Kilbane isn't getting any younger and can't get a game for Hull City. He could have called three left backs into the squad if he wanted to, he has three right backs (four if you count Kevin Foley).
At least it's positive to hear he is willing to change the system, I don't think I could take another campaign watching the mind-bogglingly boring rubbish Trap served us in the last campaign. We've got a nice group and have a real chance of qualifying for teh Euros if we play to our potential.

Another Groundhog day thread!!!
I never said McCarthy is having a better season than Reid just that Andy Reid was not a proven premiership player when he was dropped. Which he wasn't. He is now though. Like I said the key is potential!
Not going over the old stuff we couldn't agree on this time last year, but I'd imagine Stephen Kelly is in the squad as a a left back as he has probably played more games this season on the left than on the right.
You should try to give one of the most successful managers in the history of the game the benefit of the doubt every once in a while instead of immediately pouncing on his every move with tired criticisms.
It's an absolute disgrace if Trap selects O'Hara but won't select Andy Reid. Also he was quoted in the paper today saying he couldn't pick players who weren't playing for their clubs (he was talking mainly about Steven Reid), then how come he was able select Liam Lawrence, Liam Miller etc. in previous squads, and how come Kilbane is in this squad? Steven Kelly is Fulham's third choice left back and also their third choice right back. He's still better than McShane so should be in the squad, but the fact is Stephen Ward should also be in the squad. Can you not see the contradictions in what Trap says Breffni?
