Liverpool v Celtic in Croker

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Liam i'm not arguing with you on anything like that all i said was that Liverpool is the club that most Irish support and therefore would be the most suitable club to get!

will you tell me what business Liverpool and Celtic have playing in Croke Park in the first place?
I am all in favour of playing soccer and Rugby in croker, all in favour of it. But no way would i want to see 2 teams with nothing to do with Ireland or and Irish team playing there. Why Croker?

563972 Liam nobody is claiming that Liverpool are an Irish Club and you are correct that certainly after the last war, The Catholic Irish in Liverpool certainly supported Everton whilst the Orangemen there supported Liverpool. However the sectarianism in Liverpool died out fairly quickly and soon Liverpool & Everton were just Football Teams no more and no less. It is also true that in recent years a very special friendship has emerged between Celtic and Liverpool supporters. I can absolutely guarantee you that I would feel a lot safer going to Anfield in a Celtic jersey then to Old Trafford

Why wouldnt you feel safe going to Old Trafford in a Celtic top? Man united were the irish catholic club in manchester years and years ago an i dont think any fans in around old trafford would care if you wore a Celtic top.

Listen, the only reason i thought it would be good was because these two clubs get a lot of support over here and it would surely bring a huge crowd to see them. not trying to say there irish clubs when there not im just saying people would pay to see it.

This is similar to the thread about the Queen being invited to Ireland.

listen liam i think you have a serious problem with liverpool fc, thats fine, ive no problem with everton just man u fans gettin up my nose etc...(most of my froends r manu utd fans) i think you hatred goes back to heysel and the ban on english clubs - everton no doubt would have had won a european cup in that time.

we have british rock stars playing in croker all the time - why not have two well supported british teams come and entertain the irish in croker.

... and it raises the more serious question... Why do so many people here support these British sporting institutions?

562712 Dell please respond to the comment and don't attack the poster. I'm this close to making an article bleating on about how I'm bullied on this site. Getting back to the original post are people honestly being serious on this thread? Should Croke be rented out to any event going just to make the GAA a few extra pound? It lies dormant for weeks on end sometimes, maybe we should let the grass grow and take some silage off it to sell. The GAA made the historic decision to help out it's countrymen in other sports when they needed somewhere to play and had no other option but Croke Park. Now Celtic fans want to take advantage of this by playing a friendly there (when Celtic and Liverpool both have perfectly good stadia) just to save them the travelling costs. If you want to support a British team go to Britain to support them

I think that the promotions company tried for Windsor Park, Casement Park and Healy Park but all were unavailable

was at a club meeting last night. the celtic brigade were taking great pleasure in telling me they were heading to croke park for a wild weekend. so the rumour mills are in overdrive in glasgow. I assured them that it will not happen. Will it ?

Obviously you've never been to Old Trafford then. United and Celtic have a long history of friendship, and there is a strong mutual respect between the fans. As others have pointed out, United were traditionally a Catholic club, and in recent times (both before and after Nike sponsoring both teams) Celtic are one of the preferred teams for testamonial games at OT.
Rangers on the other hand, are not a popular name around OT. There has been bad blood between the fans for many years, and it's only been made worse by the actions of Rangers "fans" in Manchester after the Uefa Cup final
Celtic are often first choice opposition for Testamonials at OT,

ye thats right. celtic never had any irish connections whatsoever.

so liam if you moved abroad and happened to set your own club, would you not like them to come and play in ireland? they are a club of irish diaspora. they have EVERY right to come back in play in ireland. maybe not liverpool but celtic have every right

black&white I have been to Old Trafford but haven't been there for a Celtic game. Spoke with a few lads who were at the Champions League game there a few years ago and they said the atmosphere was very hostile and a few Celtic Fans who were scattered in pockets in the United areas were attacked. I was at the home game of that tie in Celtic Park and there is a Firm who style themselves "Men in Black" and attach themselves to the United support. These thugs were in Gasgow in force that night and caused mayhem. Celtic are the most popular team for testimonials all over the U.K. simply because they bring the biggest crowd with them

Leave the british soccer teams play in britain. We dont need soccer hooligans in croke park.

There are no "Irish/Catholic" soccer teams in Britain. They are all BRITISH! It's so pathetic to hear this put forward as justification for supporting british sporting institutions. If hurling and Football can't satisfy our hunger for sport, we should follow one of our soccer teams. There are plenty of them here to cheer.

Doesn't anybody else see the hypocrisy of a bunch of lads in the pub wetting themselves with excitement watching English Man Utd - with players that represent England - win a league match in the spring and then support every opponent England play in a big tournament a few months later?

Corckcelt please debate the point I raise rather than being childish by claiming I'm posting as numerous people, or is it a case that you're unable to put together an argument so try to change the subject? And I'm sure I speak for all Pomeroy people when I say I am truly saddened that you no longer like 'The Mountains of Pomeroy', it is a massive blow to our village and one that we may not be able to recover from. I urge you to reconsider. In a nutshell this whole thing won't happen and shame to the powers that be if it does. Why would the home of the GAA host a meaningless game between two British sides, there is absolutely no reason why this could or should happen. Again I reiterate, if you want to support a British team (like many of here do) go to Britain to watch them play

Ridiculous suggestion. Never going to happen. The sooner soccer and Rugby get's back to the new Lawnsdone road the better. I was at the Ireland italy six nations game and the Ireland - bulgaria soccer matches and the lack of atmosphere was embarrassing. Croke park is only suitable for GAA matches as the quality entertainment on the field makes up for the lack of atmosphere

_____________

Here's one good reason Pomeroy - It would earn the GAA over E1million.

all the hypocrites here who call celtic british are implying the irish in the north are british as technically both are in the uk. didnt the irish and scottish nationalists always want to be officially considered irish and scottish only. yet now the irish and the irish in the north who have their irish passports are quite happy to turn on scottish nationalists and call them british, even though they hated it when they were in the same situation not so long ago. celtic are a scottish nationalist club only, founded by the irish and continue to this day to have a massive irish connections. they have every right to play in ireland and croke park if its available for football matches.

as i said before if any one of you's set up a club abroad would you's not like your team to be able to come back and play in your home coutry. hypocrites the lot of ye's. again would happily turn on your own
