Arkle v Kauto Star

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I sincerely hope this argument has been put to bed once and for all. Arkle ran in four championship races and won 4. Kauto Star has run in five and won two! He would not be fit to tie Arkle's shoelaces.

Kauto put it to bed at Kempton two and a half months ago, Loch Gorman.

Very unfair to judge Kauto solely on his run yesterday!

Loyal, I accept that Kauto is a good horse but I am not judging him just on this weeks performance but 2 wins from 5 festival visits is hardly the record of the greatest of all time.

Imperial Commander's run today shows that it is a joke to compare the current crop of 3m chasers with the great one from the 1960s. Did not want to mention them in the same sentence as Arkle.

Imperial Commander only runs well when fresh Lochgormanabu. He was a brilliant champion three weeks ago and lets be fair, we all knew before Thrusday, that he was never going to reproduce that performance. Using the Totesport Bowl against Kauto is totally unfair.

Kauto Star is a great horse, the best ever in my opinion. You are letting yourself down by trying to devalue Kauto's performances at every available opportunity. Judge Kauto Star on Kauto Star, not on Imperial Commander.

Arkle never won Grade One two mile chases, he never won four King Georges, and he probably couldn't travel nearly as well as Kauto. Yet you conviently ignore all this and concentrate on him lumping weights around in big handicaps against fellow slowboats. Winning races like the Hennessy and the Irish National were probably the norm for champions back then but nowadays, the King George and the Gold Cup are the two most prestigious races and Kauto has won both more than once. He's a great horse Lochgormanabu, the best by far that I've ever seen and nothing you lads with your heads stuck in an era forty years ago will convince me otherwise. For what its worth, I'd consider Denman second best.

In the interests of racing, the tag thats assiociated with this unbeatable superstar from the 60s should be banished from history. Its an awful handicap for the sport when you have a champion whose talents will supposedly never be surpassed. Ignore Timeform, any ratings that say a horse existed that could have given Kauto Star twenty or so pounds and a beating at Kempton are ludricious.

Auld lads like Lochgormanabu and Ginger McCain are living back in the 60s and they are bad for the sport. Trying to de-value a great champion's performances at every chance. Ginger reckons Kauto was a good horse but not a great one, LGA said much the same earlier in this thread. Now this is where I have a major problem with the oldies becuase Kauto has been a wonderful horse and a credit to the sport. They are holding the sport back by not allowing it to evolve and attract a new audience in today's younger generation. And you know Ginger wasn't much of a trainer himself, lucky with one horse and forever immortalised was the height of his achievements. Certainly no Paul Nicholls. I wouldn't have much time for LGA either after all his Kauto-bashing on this thread.
