Imported GAA Jargon

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

GOING FORWARD is one thats needlessly thrown in whenever a manager is talking about the future. It sounds rediculous. Will we soon be hearing people saying ''Going backwards' when they're talking about something in the past tense?

I think you'll find it's pronounced Sangage! I do count count myself as an expert in this field. Hang and chesse being the top notch sangage washed down with a drop of thay from a flasch or a tk orange bottle or maybe a bottle of cadet orange if your pushing the boat out and a bit of curnt cake for desert.

Tipperary.... The Tinfoil Army

The best thay is drank from a bottle kept warm by a sock on the bog on a hot day in June and a lark singing in the clear blue sky and the perfume from the heather carried on the breeze. ( I'm getting a bit carried away with nostalgia)

The best??? import I heard recently was from our glorious national broadcaster on Saturday Sport. They had an item (v short) on the death of Cavan great Mick Higgins. "I believe he won the cup in 1947" said the interviewer "yes" answered Brian Carthy "he won the All Ireland in the polo grounds in '47". The cup comment is once again indicative of mentality in Montrose

You're could be right there, makes sense. I've never really heard it being applied to GAA though, it's certainly not that common anyway.

"Trial by Video/T.V." This has crept in and i do not approve of it !! If the ref did not see it at the time then its too bad !!

these days when a forward hits a wide, he "lacks composure", or if he scores he is "very composed in front of goal". such pathetic attempts at trying to copy the nonsense jargon that sky sports and the likes come out with. just say it as it is!

and what is marty morrisseys obsession with the line "heres some statictical information for you"

So what you are saying is that it is okay to cheat, as long as the referee doesn't catch you? It would be okay for, say, a player to gouge out another player's eye (like in rugby), because the referee didn't see it. Or kick an opponent in the head when they are on the ground and the ref has his back turned?

Conversely, if a referee sends someone off in the wrong, I presume you would be against using TV evidence to exonerate them?

Nocky, that is not what i mean at all. We have brought in something that cannot be policed. The big important games is where the cameras are not down in Div 3 & 4. You can have a melee down there but because its not covered by camera they get away without sanction if the referee or linesmen don't see it clearly but up in the top divisions everything is seen and punished. It is my opinion that this was brought in simply because other sports have it i.e. soccer and rugby and no thought went into it. Why should a Senior footballer in Div 4 get away with what a Senior footballer in Div1 is punished for ?

A very popular daily paper in the north started a lot of this nonsense.

Invented nicknames such as Cork becoming the "red Devils", people winning "back to back" all Ireland's instead of two in a row, and Tyrone doing well in the "All Ireland play off series" post season, rather than winning the quarter final and semi final.

Enough to make you boycott the paper, apart from anything else.

There is 1 ref, 2 linesmen n 4 Umpires you think between the 7 of them watching the play that at least 1 of them would see the incident. for an amature they are taking this a bit too far no wonder its costin loadz of money into game, would rather pay players than get money wasted in other things

Slasher, I am arguing this same point on another thread, the "Appeals" thread, and I think it would be best if we debated it on that thread only for convenience sake. I will post a response to your previous post on that thread shortly.

As with Slasher, I will reply to this post on the other (more relevant) thread - even though it is hard to know what point you are trying to make from that collection of letters and numbers.

what about the "quater-back" i.e usually a centre half forward who plays deep and can "ping" a few passes around the field...
