Yes nocky but we would have a lot more addicts and a lot more crime committed by them as well to pay for their "legal" addiction !!
______________

What is the basis for this assumption Slasher? Do the majority of people steal to feed their alcohol and tobacco addictions? A (small) part of the money from any taxes would be spent on the rehabilitation of addicts.

nocky,

I know of heroin addicts who spend over 100 a day on their habit. You don't earn that kind of money and they turn to crime, prostitution, stealing etc to pay for it. Coke is not cheap either !!

We're not talking about heroin though Slash.... this drug without question should be banned in its present form.

I know of a programme that was set up over in the UK for people who are addicts and were given the pure form of the drug....without the rat poison mix
and they were able to hold down jobs, find an Apartment and pay the rent. The only difference is at the end of their day... instead of having a couple of cans or a smoke they bang up or smoke heroin... they come down. Go to bed and wake up to catch the bus to work in the morning.

560191 Why would you want to legalise something which causes so much grief, misery and poverty among vulnerable people???? Drugs are evil. They corrupt good people by forcing them into a life of crime to feed their habit. Theft, murder and gun crime is on the increase because of drugs. And yet there are some coming on here saying we should legalise them and make them freely available to the youth of today. Have we lost our minds people? Like I know some can handle their habit quite well and are respectable in public and all that, but why run the risk of destroying other lives by allowing these head shops to stay open?

I agree, I won't ever touch drugs and I can say that hand on heart. At the age of 17 I have seen 4 of my friends have fits and end up in hospital because of drugs and they werent from the same batch either. I have witnessed my friends stealing from their parents, shops etc to feed their habits. I have seen a guy beat a man senseless he was in intensive care for a long time and ALL he had has was weed. So people on here saying it should be legalised should be ashamed of themselves. There is a serious drug problem in this country and it isn't helped by people like you who freely admit to taking drugs. Also in relation to someones earlier posts about taking drugs not being illegal just possesion and selling, obviously if you take them you have them in your possesion so technically it is illegal activity.

Just like alcoholics and chain smokers.

The fact of the matter is that alcohol and tobacco are drugs, so whatever reasoning anyone applies against legalising other drugs is trumped by this fact. Just like with the legal drugs, the addictions are down to the people, not the substance. Also, the sustances are already here, the addicts are already here, so this notion that legalising them would result in an explosion of addicts is inaccurate

562714 Jimbodub, not all of them, not all of them !!

There will always be some people living on the streets man... they simply cant exist in society. They can be given a house, a job... a future! and in no time they'll be back drunk in the gutter.

It's the same with everything including drugs... there will alway, always be the few... you have to look at the big picture and see what's best overall. Nothing in this world is perfect.. but I believe that there are far better ways of approaching this issue within oursystem, that we are currently... even willing to try...!

The present system has failed in this country...drug use is rampant. How long will it take for us to realise that it's a war we cannot win. Lets take the guns out of the criminals hands...

The Master,

Of course drug use will rise if you decriminalise it. More users = more problems !!

themastermayo.

the explosion has been here 4 this past fifteen years, what planet are u on.
the simple fact of the matter is the advertising of dring and tobacco is everwhere, it out 2 reel in the youth of today.
young people and daily pressures of life in todays world , find it as an escape especially when u have brewery, pubs, and supermarkets in who my ipinion have been the biggest culprits in all of this , advertising buy 1 get 1 free , 5pm- 8pm= promotions.
do not get me wrong every individual is and should be responsible 4 their actions, but the real culprits are the ones i mentioned above.

Well then the logical thing to do would be to criminalise alcohol and tobacco. Less users = Less problems

Ya see that. Are the people who frequent these shops, now more in danger from the conservative anti-everything brigades arson attacks, than they are from the products in these stores?

Did you seee primetime last night and the section re Dissident Republicans
Head shop owners have been warned by "anti drug" vigilantes and one in Derry has been shot.
Obviously the sale of legal highs is not in the best interest of the competition.

I've heard that Sinn Fein have been holding protests against these places...

bit rich coming from the likes of them... The IRA made plenty from selling drugs... sure they still run the show in Dublin

I'd safely say that you heard wrong. Sinn Fein had nothing to do with these protests. Possibly Republican Sinn Fein or other dissidents.

And by the way it is INLA members who have a big say in the drug trade as it is now, not members of Sinn Feion .
That is just the typical anti- Sinn Fein story that is constantly thrown about by the pro-partition Southern Media
