Buckfast - No longer the poor man's drink!!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I am a big fan of buckfast, originally only drank it as it was cheap and got the night off to a good start but actually thoroughly enjoy drinking it now but it now costs 11 euro in my local offie,is this the same everywhere or are we being shafted?

It's lethal stuff Beer Baron. I know of lads drinking it in Monaleen in Limerick & one ended up smashing the other in the face with a rock thinking he could knock him out to get him home. Be careful man :-)

Never tasted the stuff
But curious as to why its popular with students ?

Its about the same strength as wine isn't it ? (14% odd)
If it costs 11/12 a bottle then that certainly isn't cheap
Presume if getting blotto on the cheap is the objective
You could buy 3 bottles of cheap wine or a bottle of own label Vodka for that money

So whats the appeal ?

It seems to be very popular with my Cavan natives but i have to say i never drank it so i can't give an opinion. However it has received a bad press over the years and has long been associated with open air drinking and homeless people with addictions !!

Rua:

It gives you a kinda sugar kick or something. Great stuff in anyways although I don't partake in it anymore but still keep an eye on the price! Still get it for under a tenner out my way but I have seen the price creeping up some places.

The day that it goes over the €10 mark will be the death of Buckfast!!

Did anyone or does anyone look at the numbers on the base of the bottle before buying. Seemingly they are graded 1-10 in terms of acidity or alkaline or whatever. We used to always claim that 4 and 5 were the most easily drank, but realistically we were only fooling ourselves and it didn't make much of a differnece. We used to occasionally put it in the microwave too. It used to be around 8-9 euro back in the day.

£6 a bottle in my offies. the numbers thing is just an urban legend if you ask me. Absolute rocket fuel- must be the caffeine content.

You are being shafted for EVERYTHING in the South. It's horrible stuff but sweet and is about £6 up here. I couldn't believe my eyes the other day. ONE can of Magners in a Southern paper was being advertised as reduced from 2.79 Euros to 1.79 while 20 bottles of beer were 'on sale' for 20 Euros. Is it any wonder tourists are staying away in their droves from Rip Off Republic? There was a great article by a journalist in the Irish Mail On Sunday on how the Southern tourits industry has totally priced the Yanks out of coming. They can get 5 days golfing in the Bahamas ALL IN including flights for the same price as 3 days golf and hotel in the South NOT including flights.

had it on a hen party and thought it was lovely.

Vodka is my drink but the odd time would take a bottle of Millar or Corona.
