I can't believe people actually mentioned the Killers and U2. I mean the title of the thread is "greatest rock band", not "worst rock band".

557124 The Killers are almost like a pop band at this stage. Hot Fuss is a good album but it tails away towards the end but still manages to always get in those top 10 albums of the decade countdowns. I cant stand the Chill Peppers. Metallica are legends, as I said befroe ya have to remember what they achieved. They got no radio play for pretty much 8 years. They made 4 classic albums in that time and lost their bass player, Cliff Burton, when their tour bus crashed. When the Black Album came out they expolded and were everywhere. There's a copy of that album in alot of cd collections I can guarantee. I dont think its their best album but it brought them alot of radio and tv exposure. They are also one of the best bands to tour and they come to these shores on a very consistent basis, way more than most other so called great bands.

Its pity that bands like At The Drive In didn't make it, they would of been huge

Nice to see an ATDI fan here. What an awesome band. Its a pity they broke up when they did, I thought they would be huge too, Relationship of Command showed what they could do. But fortunately we got The Mars Volta out of it. I seen them in the Olympia before Christmas and they were amazing. A lot of people feel that they are the rightful heirs to Led Zep's throne in regards to pushing boundaries and being innovators rather than imitators. Been loving this band for years now. Anyway, there have been murmurs of ATDI reforming for reunion shows, don't know how true this is but I have heard they have cleared the air so there is now no bad blood between any of the members. Something could happen soon.

I was going to get tickets for that Mars Volta gig but I kept putting it off and then when I went to get them , they were gone, similar to the time when Homer could have met Mr T at the mall. Do Mars Volta play any ATDI at their gigs???

Nah they don't play any of their sruuf. The Mars Volta have a large enough catalogue to dip into at this stage. Tickets were very hard to come by. I managed to get a few of the last ones for the top tier, which was unfortunate but still an awesome gig.

Rock is a very loose term, it could mean pop rock in as the Killers or like heavy stuff in as RATM or whatever. For me the best bands would be The stones, The Beatles, Thin Lizzy, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, The Doors, The Stone Roses, Oasis, Blur, Radiohead (are they rock??) and there's probably a load I haven't mentioned.
