I think U2 are probably the greatest band ever. What they have achieved is phenomenal. Their concerts last July were amazing, but at the same time there was a lot of 'save the world' stuff which was good, but too much of it in a concert can kill the atmosphere. The thing about U2 is when you are not in Ireland their music tends to make you think of home.

I'd have to give Iron Maiden an honourable mention though. Huge album sales, 30 years since their debut 'Iron Maiden' album and a brilliant band live.

Has to be Led Zeppelin, followed by the Rolling Stones and then AC/DC. All the other rock bands would not be about if it was not for Led Zep, they redefined music and what you can do with it in the late 60's (along with the Yardbirds, who were Jimmy Page's previous band)

Guns N Roses, they drank and snorted everyting known to man and still put on a great show - when Axl was in the mood that is!! Or Metallica, sold millions of albums in the 80's with no radio or tv play.

U2 are the most over-rated band in the world,in fact i wouldnt even consider them rock.i know il have fans of theirs on here moaning but in my opinion, their music is completely boring, and most of their songs have the same old sound,it seems "the edge" only knows one tune.At best, what they play is pop/rock.That song in which they collaberated with greenday, when the song starts is just a typical example of the same monotonous tune that U2 play.

Define "Rock Band"
Are Oasis a rock band? Are the Beatles?
Because if U2 are a "rock" band, so are the other 2

So taking that Rock just means "Not Pop" Music then

1. The Beatles
2. The Smith's
3. Nirvana
4. Oasis
5. The Stone Roses

If you mean Rock as in Heavy, Hard stuff then

1. Nirvana
2. Metallica
3. GNR Pre Spaghetti Incident
4. Thin Lizzy
5. Pearl Jam

I'm probably opening a can of worms up here but I never got The Rolling Stones. Very over-rated I always thought. I know they have sold a lot of records but i'm sorry I dont get them at all. They going almost 50years and I can honestly say i only like maybe 5 of their songs. I guess one good song a decade isn't bad!!! Queens of the Stone Age deserve a mention also, cracking band. And I have a soft spot for Motley Crue. Aerosmith were very good in the 70's and late 80's also.

555317 Cheers Doc

I'm thinking a trip to Bratislava or Barcelona could be on the cards.

if you can only do one, barcelona is the one, bratislava is rough enough. the game would be better i imagine though.

___

Have been to Barcelona already so I'll venture to Bratislava depending on when the fixture is put on for. I've been in Eastern Europe before and enjoyed it and some of lads were in Bratislava last time we played (Euro 2008 qualifiers) and they said it was good.

The Slovak game will be better alright. Just have to wait for the fixture list. The meeting for the fixtures is on the 20th I think and it will be important that the FAI are strong and try and get the best run a fixtures.

think it was recorded/filmed in 76 but released in 78, i have it on Vinyl, its on Cd and DVD now

one of the best bands of the decade alright, but they'd still have a long way to go if they were to become one of the greatest ever. even some of their songs like replaceable which didnt make it onto their b-side album are brilliant. they hit mainstream acclaim alright, but in my opinion are still under-rated for the quality of music they produce. they dont have a bad song

some people are coming out with some real rubbish. red hot chili peppers?. metalica, pearl jam, iron maiden hahahaha. if ye want to start putting in those type bands, smashing pumpkins are way ahead of the rest.

a lot of people here cant seem to quite grasp what "rock" is. it doesnt have to be load music like ac/dc. its by far the most broad type of genre out their. it emcompasses nearly everything, even some reggae, soul etc are sub genre's of it. most original pop is a sub genre of rock. nearly every type of music is a sub genre of rock. evan some dance can be put under the heading of rock. obviously whats now known as r&b, mainstrean manufactured rubbish pop etc have nothing to do with rock.

folk rock legends, simon and garfunkel deserve a mention

The Killers are almost like a pop band at this stage. Hot Fuss is a good album but it tails away towards the end but still manages to always get in those top 10 albums of the decade countdowns. I cant stand the Chill Peppers. Metallica are legends, as I said befroe ya have to remember what they achieved. They got no radio play for pretty much 8 years. They made 4 classic albums in that time and lost their bass player, Cliff Burton, when their tour bus crashed. When the Black Album came out they expolded and were everywhere. There's a copy of that album in alot of cd collections I can guarantee. I dont think its their best album but it brought them alot of radio and tv exposure. They are also one of the best bands to tour and they come to these shores on a very consistent basis, way more than most other so called great bands.

Its pity that bands like At The Drive In didn't make it, they would of been huge
