Seven Players Red Carded

Kildare very lucky not to lose 2 or 3 more players also. Fair play to MJ Tierney who was the only player to not get involved, deserves a lot of credit for that. He was also the outstanding player on the park.

Jinxie, Don't be ridiculous, afraid of Kildare..its Meath we want a crack at. Honestly, this crap happens the start of every year..Does it take a player to be killed or a referee put in hospital for something meaningful to be done about this. I'm sick of too little too late and then all forgotten by the championship.

Add in the battle of Aughrim to the seemingly extensive list of Leinster football "melees" and you'd wonder why you don't have a reputation for this kind of thing?

Chainsaw dont think it was handbag stuff, not looking at it from my position. It was dirty and a lot of kicks went in. I know everyone that was there will have their own opinions but I cant understand how the ref sent off 3 from Laois and 2 from Kildare after the melee, he should have sent the same amount from both sides. I also think he sent the wrong lads off from Kildare, there were 2 or 3 different Kildare lads that I thought should have went ahead of Doyle and Flaherty. The papers are reporting today that it all started when Ronan Sweeney got pushed in the back but anyone that was there would have seen the Sweeney got hit in a sore area. I think both ourselves and Laois are going to be hit with big fines and possibly lose players to lenghty suspensions. Stupid carry on in a mickey mouse competition.

Fair enough Willie always respect your opinion and if action of some sort had being taken after the first incident there probably would have being no row. I do agree the results of the inevitable investigation could leave both teams shy a good number of players for the league at least.

Ninjasmyth.
Youve just told me not to be ridiculous!
Eh, your calling for Kildare & Laois to be thrown outta the O'Byrne cup & League, Looking for them to have to play behind closed doors, & insinuating that we are not far away from SOMEONE BEING KILLED in an o'byrne cup game?
And then you say im being ridiculous for suggesting that you were being a bit harsh!
Think you need to weigh things up a bit there before making any more of the sorta claims.

have to agree with a few of my meath lads on this if it wer dublin or meath there would be an outcry for bans and more bans to be handed out to players but since its not dublin involved i dont think any more will be done just goes to show how big people make dublin in the media
the 2 teams involved in yesterday should be kicked out or made play games with no fans at them

jinxie we are not afraid of kildare. i have very fond memories of our last trip to newbridge. a comprehensive qualifier victory in 07. I do not share the view that kildare or laois should be thrown out of the competition. Sunday will be good preparation for the start of the nfl.

Jinxie,
If it happened on a Saturday night out in Drogheda or Navan it would end up in court. Why do lads think they can get away with GBH on the field of play. You might think I'm going overboard on this, but we're talking about an amateur sport and a game. DOWN WITH THIS SORT OF THING - CAREFUL NOW (Father Ted quote)

Still think thats a bit too harsh. but we will agree to disagree.

But allot of the problem here is that nobody can predict what will happen. Theres no consistancy to the dicipliary actions of the GAA at all.
If this was either of the GAA's 2 big rival sports here, soccer or rugby, when a player is sent off, he knows & the fans know 9 times outta 10 how long he is gonna be suspended for even before the player has walked down the tunnel. If not, then definatly be 10 or 11 the next morning its dealt with & theres never any drama about it because theres a general guideline they seem to follow.
But in the GAA nobody ever knows whats gonna happen next & more frustraingly when its gonna happen.
It'll probanly be the end of the week before anyone comes out & says what the punishment is.
I remember in 08 when Meath/Dublin row was all over the papers reading on the wednesday that the GAA were awaiting the refs report before taking it further! Why is it that 3 days later this is not submitted & nothing done about it!

Fair play to the ref as he applied the rules and hope more refs stand up to this sort of behavouir.

Just a repeat of Laois behavior that has been part and parcel of Laois teams down the years. Really, what's new?

I dont know if its been said but its absolute madness that there were 5 players sent off over a melee.2 is quite sufficient and gets the point across just the same, instead of the game descending into a farce. Was there not an old rule about the first man in after the row erupts between two players?something like that? The paper said that there was only 2 players who dint get involved,so how could 5 players out of 28 possibly be picked out??Ive seen it before where these players get longer than usual suspensions, not on the merits of what they did but because there were so many involved in the melee.
Football is supposed to be a mans game and 5 lads getting sent off over a bit of handbagging puts a shame on the gaa,and to be honest i find it embarassing. Now dont get me wrong,if a player does something like hits/kicks a lad when hes down, then he deserves the sending off and a suspension. But if hes sent off for standing up and swinging at another player who is also up to divilment in a melee, then its just men blowing off steam.

Were you at this match. If not don't go judging the referee. I'm pretty sure he wasn't taking a swing at anybody.
