Transfers

Lads transfers are finished for this year so time to move on. No offence to the Plunketts but if all the players they have (at all levels) from south side of Drogheda played with their real clubs (Tones and Nicks), then the Plunketts would have difficulties fielding teams at any level. That is a fact so stop this Plunketts dont poach nonsense.

GPA.NO.Way should get his facts straight. Some of those Plunketts players from the southside fathers' or grandfathers played with the Plunketts and the rest approached the Plunketts. If you look at the Nicks and the Tones teams you'll find a number of players in each team who played for the Plunketts previously. So who is poaching players. Areas in a town don't mean alot and should not be fixed. Its natural that each club should have a primary catchment area, but after that it shouldn't matter. My point is that when players play for a club you should not get transferred easily away from it. The amount of transfers in this county is ridiculous.

Yea gpa.no.way it's convenient that you want to move on when you realise that your argument doesn't stand up. You know it, I know it and the rest of the County knows it that the O'Raghallaighs under age structure is terrible. The only way to put a stop to their strategy is for the County Board to block anyone looking to transfer to the Raghs. That way they might take a leaf out of other Clubs books and start looking at developing an under age structure where they can actually field teams at all levels. Unfortunately the Raghs seem to be able to get whatever transfers they want through and they seem to be able to block transfers out of their Club when it suits them.
And on a side note, who have you's lined up for next year?

Inbetweener, we do field at all age groups, we might not compete in the higher divisions, but we do field teams. Its the taking part that counts not winning at all costs. To say our underage structure is a joke is an insult to the coaches and juvenile committee of the club who put hours of work in to coaching kids. We might not be successful underage but maybe that is the problem with Louth football that clubs will do whatever it takes to be successful at underage level. As for transfers, we got four adult players this year, all who approached the O Raghallaighs. What is the club suppossed to do send them to another club in the town??

This is a joke.

If you lookat past years of transfers the Raghs rarely got more than 1 or 2 players & in some cases none at all. Its not the done thing to come on here to slag off a clubs under age structures as its down to the indiviiduals within the club to give up there free time to coach all age groups. This thread is called TRANSFERS and thats what should be discussed.
I'm fairly sure the rest of the county don't care about club areas within Drogheda. Its simple transfers are caused by many things, friends, family, schools etc, if a player wants to move well he should be allow to move, no point in football losing a player no matter what age he/she is. The focus on the Raghs is down to the fact that 5 players transferred into the club this year. Each 1 in its own right was fair & just and remember each club has the right to object if they are not happy.

I'd say given the rivalry between the Plunks & the Raghs over the last few years this is a case of sour grapes on the Plunketts part. I'd say part of the reason the 2 rogans left was the colour of the Plunketts Jerseys. Who would want to wear a wine coloured jersey anyway!

find a big field and get in there and bait the heads off each other... then the last man standing can have first pick for a 5 a side and the winning team then have a table quiz and who ever wins is the winner of this stupid topic.

inbetweener perhaps it is jet lag that has caused your irritation. The Plunketts are a great club and have done great work in promoting their club while ignoring the parish rule in gaeilge games. Despite being based in Mell parish, the Plunketts have had the benefit of the most talented footballers in the town of Drogheda. They have dominated all local competitions and have won more medals/trophies than all the other Drogheda clubs put together in local competitions. Some might say why wouldn't they but I say well done. However, despite total domination of the game in Drogheda, they failed dismally to convert this into success at county level. In the past 40 years, they won 2 minor championships 1996 and 2003.They last won anU16 c/ship in 1974 and have won 2 U14 c/ships in 1992 and 2005. The county board records went back to 1970. I still say well done lads so how can losing the 2 Rogan brothers be such a big deal.

i think[gpa] the records show teams like the nicks and fechins-drednots have also a great track record at under age in drogheda, maybe you can enlighten us all on the more pertinant question of when are the rats going to sort out the thorny issue of the county grounds.twenty years ago it was argubly the best ground outside headquaters, sadly its a shambles now.

Setanta,

Again, This thread is concerning the Transfers not the county ground. Perhaps you should ask the county board about the lack of movement in the Raghs

It is far from jetlag causing my irritation but the sheer hypocrisy of the O'Raghs taking the 2 Rogan brothers from the Club who coached them to be the players they are today then going and objecting when two of their footballers want to leave for GENUINE footballing reasons.

Rob K, sorry inbetweener. Please explain the GENUINE football reasons, because you have already been told the O Raghallaighs field at the lads age groups . Last nights county board meeting showed what people really think on this matter, 24 votes to 3 to refuse the transfers. End of.

Lads can we finish this debate now that Senior Board delegates have supported Minor Board delegates in favour of O Raghallaighs. Everybody is wrong except the Plunketts.

inbetweener, your real team are playing tonight at Kilmarnock, the Raghs colours dont always irritate you. Hyprocity may be the right word. A transfer to your team has made big news, enjoy.

This is getting silly now. We shouldnt be attacking each other here. The transfers are over and we'll all move on. But it doesn't change the facts here and that the Plunketts, I believe rightly feel aggrieved here.

JoeJ should have checked his facts before posting on this site. Mell is where the Plunketts are based but the also came from Bothar Brugha and that general area. THe Rats had Boyle O'Reilly

Clubs drawing players from their own area went out with the 60's in Drogheda . In the 60's the Street Leagues designated what teams players turned out for at under age level with where a player lived determining who he played for . This worked well for a while . The Plunketts had Mell , North Road , Trinty Gardens Trinity St , Georges St , Patrick St , Magdalene St and the streets in the town centre west of Peter St . O'Raghallaighs had Hardmans Gardens , Pearse Park , Boyle OReilly , Beechgrove , Shamrock VillaS and Ballymackenny Road . Blues had more or less the rest of the north side of the town coming with players coming from the Hand Street and Francis Street set ups with Bothar Brugha who had only their own street , Church St and Windmill Road sending its players mostly to the Plunketts but others to the O'Raghallaigs and the odd one including Jimmy Mulroy to the Blues . .
In the late 60's a number of players who had started with Francis Street and who would normally be expected to graduate to the Blues started playing Minor with the Plunketts including Niall O'Dowd , of the Irish Voice in New York . This opened the floodgates and clubs started to pick up players from al areas .

Millmountharps I would believe your explanation is correct. This would explain the lack of success achieved by the Drogheda clubs over past decades, perhaps now is the time to reveiw the situation and put in place proper controlled regions from which clubs can recruit players in the future and restrict transfers. It is said,"if it is not broke why fix it", obviously the system or lack of a system is Drogheda is broken and needs fixing fast. Lads sit down and do it, every club will benefit in the longer term.

These areas should be done away with altogether.a player should be allowed play where ever they're happy,if not we'll start losing players to other sports.if a club cant attract players at underage levels then maybe they should take a long hard look at themselves instead of accusing other teams of poaching.
