If you were picking a team tomorrow and these two players were at their peak who would you choose?

well then fitzgerald. its a no brainer

But that is the thing 32, joyce will 9 times out of ten perform at or near his best, m fitz was nowhere near that consistent. If you are only looking at a once off peak then m fitz gets it, but if there was a game in the morning how can you guarantee that peak? Who is the better player should also be based on factors like consistency. For instance, conor mortimer is the third highest scorer in a single championship over the last 10 years, does that make him the third best forward in championship history in that time?

Judging by your tantrum there joe joe I think I can put you down in the Joyce column then?

Don't worry next topic I'll make it P. Joyce V P. Joyce and it'll be right down your alley and you can argue with yourself without the near death fear of having someone disagree with you. ok joe joe.

Fitzgerald for me. Joyce was and still is a great player but in the last 20 years the only player to come close to Fitz in terms of natural ability is Peter Canavan and even he's a good bit behind Maurice. That says it all about how good Fitzgerald was because Canavan was some player as well.

fitzgerald had a little more class (not sayin joyce isnt one of the classyest players goin!) and was a cool player under pressure but joyce carried galway through a good few games even to very reciently, this would shade it for me, but nothin in it.

Both outstanding footballers. Saw both live on several occasions, thought Joyce had the hard edge when needed but for complete skill with no even suspicion on cheating Maurice Fitz steals it and in my view was the most complete footballer even ahead of Peter the Great. Three class acts that were a joy to watch live.

Pat Spillane ( very quiet former Kerry player ) once said that the only modern Kerry player who would have made the team he played on was Maurice Fitzgerald. Personally , I think Seamus Moynihan and possibly Dara O'Se would have as well. But love or loath Spillane , for him to give Fitzgerald that big of a compliment says a lot. Considering how much he likes to go on about his achievements and the team he was a member of.

Ironic that most of the Meath contributors on this topic went for Fitzgerald although they suffered a lot more from the hands of Joyce in 2001!

Joyce done his apprenticeship in Kerry with the All Stars Sigerson side. Someone says Joycel longevity, Fitzy kicked 10 points in 87 Munster Final and scored 1 goal and a point in the South Kerry final this year. Watching Fitzy was special most complete footballer.

Joyce isn't fit to clean Fitzgeralds boots, the difference was night and day. Joyce was/is a slightly above average forward on what is now a poor team, and his goal in the all Ireland final should have been disallowed because he took too many steps. Fitzgerald was a magician and Paidi O'Shea should be ashamed of himself the way he treated the greatest player of the last 30 years.

Thats idiotic Barry. Joyce is widely accepted as being a modern great. Maybe he wasn't on Maurice Fitz's level (Debatable) but he was still a top class player for the last 12 years. He has played in 4 all ireland finals. He won two and was brilliant in both, and he was was excellent in the drawn game against Kerry in 2000 despite having meninjitis. You obviously dont watch much football. Galway have been generally poor since 2001 and the only reason we've had any modicum of success is because of Joyce.

News to me.

The word "great" is over used a lot, even by me.
