blu paul curran was a better player than moynahan in my opinion mickey linden was as good as canavan tohill was another great these were are all great players but they all just fall short of maurice fitz but were all entitled to our opinion and everyone has a different one hipster (Dublin) - Posts: 2509 - 23/01/2010 15:54:35 540611 Link 0 |
If you were picking a team tomorrow and these two players were at their peak who would you choose? TheMaster (Mayo) - Posts: 16187 - 24/01/2010 14:43:27 540976 Link 0 |

Fitzgerald for me. Joyce was and still is a great player but in the last 20 years the only player to come close to Fitz in terms of natural ability is Peter Canavan and even he's a good bit behind Maurice. That says it all about how good Fitzgerald was because Canavan was some player as well. dubupnorth (Dublin) - Posts: 1897 - 26/01/2010 15:59:43 543033 Link 0 |
fitzgerald had a little more class (not sayin joyce isnt one of the classyest players goin!) and was a cool player under pressure but joyce carried galway through a good few games even to very reciently, this would shade it for me, but nothin in it. olddelwexican (Wexford) - Posts: 38 - 26/01/2010 16:24:02 543066 Link 0 |

Both outstanding footballers. Saw both live on several occasions, thought Joyce had the hard edge when needed but for complete skill with no even suspicion on cheating Maurice Fitz steals it and in my view was the most complete footballer even ahead of Peter the Great. Three class acts that were a joy to watch live. bananapublican (Leitrim) - Posts: 878 - 27/01/2010 14:27:08 543924 Link 0 |
Pat Spillane ( very quiet former Kerry player ) once said that the only modern Kerry player who would have made the team he played on was Maurice Fitzgerald. Personally , I think Seamus Moynihan and possibly Dara O'Se would have as well. But love or loath Spillane , for him to give Fitzgerald that big of a compliment says a lot. Considering how much he likes to go on about his achievements and the team he was a member of. dubupnorth (Dublin) - Posts: 1897 - 27/01/2010 15:12:39 543969 Link 0 |
Ironic that most of the Meath contributors on this topic went for Fitzgerald although they suffered a lot more from the hands of Joyce in 2001! tommy k (Galway) - Posts: 3470 - 27/01/2010 15:23:08 543983 Link 0 |

Joyce done his apprenticeship in Kerry with the All Stars Sigerson side. Someone says Joycel longevity, Fitzy kicked 10 points in 87 Munster Final and scored 1 goal and a point in the South Kerry final this year. Watching Fitzy was special most complete footballer. castlemaine (Kerry) - Posts: 546 - 29/01/2010 20:20:12 546564 Link 0 |
Joyce isn't fit to clean Fitzgeralds boots, the difference was night and day. Joyce was/is a slightly above average forward on what is now a poor team, and his goal in the all Ireland final should have been disallowed because he took too many steps. Fitzgerald was a magician and Paidi O'Shea should be ashamed of himself the way he treated the greatest player of the last 30 years. barry.o.bama (USA) - Posts: 33 - 30/01/2010 19:53:12 547047 Link 0 |
Thats idiotic Barry. Joyce is widely accepted as being a modern great. Maybe he wasn't on Maurice Fitz's level (Debatable) but he was still a top class player for the last 12 years. He has played in 4 all ireland finals. He won two and was brilliant in both, and he was was excellent in the drawn game against Kerry in 2000 despite having meninjitis. You obviously dont watch much football. Galway have been generally poor since 2001 and the only reason we've had any modicum of success is because of Joyce. jafallon (Galway) - Posts: 489 - 30/01/2010 20:21:55 547076 Link 0 |
