The Rock's point was a mighty score all right, but Ciaran Carey gets my vote for the best ever. It was in the last minute of an epic match with the scores level when he grabbed that puck-out, soloed 50 yards and fired over the winning point against the reigning all-Ireland champions. He was the best player on the pitch that day and its a shame he never won an all-Ireland.

Ciaran Careys point against Clare in 1996 was best I've ever seen, but am probably biased. Still brings out the goose bumps when I watch it. He was a class act.

Ciaran Carey v Clare 1996.

DJ v Clare 2002 when he showed every one why he's called "Dodger"

534986 Ciaran Carey for Limerick vs Clare in 96 definitely. Could never figure out why DJ Carey's point against Clare was rated so highly, the Clare defender fell, there was no-one around him it was just like hitting a free over the bar.

Agree with you man. It was a great score but its probably not even one of DJ's best! Does anyone (Wexford lads especially) remember a score by Quigly (I think) where he kicked the ball over the bar from the ground on the run? He was on the 21 or so into the Hill?

no doubt about it O'Sullivan's score was a great score and I actually think he did the same against us in a qualifier in Thurles in 2002, he didn't hit anyone but came out of defence and smashed it over.

The difference is though, O'Sullivan's point was mid-game where he had won the ball without much competition, walked through Jack Foley & put it over. Cork lost.

Ciaran Carey did it on a sweltering hot day, sides level 1-12 to 0-15, caught it on his 40, beat a number of Clare lads, lost them & put it over.

No comparison really.

You're all wrong. This is the best point ever!

Think that Quigley's point was super skill exhibiting the best work of the overhead pull & striking without catching, but I don't think it was as good as Ciaran Careys but better than O'Sullivan's.

534694 Those light balls were ridiculous. I was pointing over frees from 70-80 metres out when I was 14.

How about the King's point in the league against Cork:

Whilst not the greatest ever, it is a fine point. Under pressure yet still sells a dummy.

I'd still go with the Quigley point. Carey's was class as well to be fair, even if he did take 5 steps but to be honest everyone was taking the extra steps in those days ;-). The best player I have seen not to win an all ireland. Lets hope Joe Canning does not gain that mantle from him.

With the Rock's point, whilst he floors the Limerick lad, it was a bit of a hit and hope in ways. Was he looking for the score or just a huge clearance? A fantastic moral lifting point either way.

Agree slayer, Ciarans was great because it was the last minute of a knockout game.

I never thought much of DJs, I could strike the ball off the stick when I was 10.

DJ is at home crying into his 5 All Ireland Seniro medals, 10 Senior Leinster medals, 4 league medals, Under 21 All Ireland medal, minor all ireland medal, 2 railway cup medals, 2 county senior medals, his hurler of the year and all star awards. He just phoned and said he is thinking of throwing them all into the fire as he'd never match redfoot's skill as a 10 year old.

Must agree, DJ to me was severely overrated. Maybe because I can only remember him play from around 1999 on, but whatever games that I did see him play he just seemed ordinary enough, certainly no Henry Sheflin but I probably just missed his best years.

Actually, now as I think of it,Liam Dunne's point vs Offaly to beat them by 13 point's in 2003 was the best I seen.He hit it from the extreme right of his own end line and put over from there,it was in Wexford Pk aswell which has a pitch about the same size of Croke Pk.

Ah c'mon :-) You have won so much that maybe people would like to see this honour go to some other player from some other county!

Personally I don't think DJ Carey was over-rated. His point V Clare in 2002 was a great score, but for me the score that defined him was his goal V Wexford in 1993. 0-13 to 1-9 down with time almost up, he ran through and after taking the permitted number of catches he booted the ball to the net to win the game. Class act.
