First officially paid manager?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

John Evans, the Tipperary manager, has been appointed as the counties first Director of Football, a full time paid position that encompasses all elements of developing football in Tipp at underage and senior level. It has just been announced on RTE radio but as of yet no links are available to the story. Are such appointments likely in future in other counties? And is it a good or bad idea?

You will see alot more getting full time paid like this and do not agree with it though.

Might as well make their payments legal as it is going on in counties and clubs everywhere. I know of an intermediate club manager getting E300 a week for 10 months and he already has a good job. The recession isn't bothering him
There are managers in the League of Ireland 1st division not getting, that and it is supposed to be a professional sport. I am not in favour of professionalism but the people who are against the players even having a voice through the GPA conveniently ignore the professionalism in mansgement. The word hypocrisy springs to mind.

Hard to know.. these jobs were always deemed non payable due to the "Love of the game". I know managers were not paid, or it known that they were paid but they 100% received contributions by county boards for expenses etc behind closed doors.
How much will he be paid? Does this not open a whole can of worms on how much each manager, if paid, should be paid? Would every county have a flat rate, or depending on sucess of manager while in the role? I dont know if this is a good move. If thats the case all people involved in the games will want to be paid, and i can see it becoming a money racket and the passion of the game degraded a little. Thats just my initial thought.

I think its best to have ANY and ALL payments out in the open rather than whats currently going on with many managers getting payments under the table so to speak.

What do you think Gilroy is getting? Do you think Daly is going all the way up to Dublin for free. The Tipperary Football Board and The Friends of Tipperary Football have been pro-active about developing a minority sport within the county by appointing an experienced man like Evans. We are only now begining to head in the direction of where the Ulster counties are in terms of development and we are getting knocked for being "professional". It's ridiculous. There are GPOs (Games Promotion Officers) all over the country in full time jobs, these GPOs cannot be selectors or managers on county teams yet they can be players (Tadgh Kennelly). There are club managers up and down the country getting monstrous expenses, €100 a session in a lot of cases. Don't knock John Evans.

roundball and dhorse no player or manager should be paid to do what they do but they should get their expences if you start paying them you might as well start a transfare market and everyone knows a director of football is a manager and if u start paying these people only big clubs with big sponsors will do good and ie dublin with vodafone they could get the cash to pay managers and players or cork with 02 could do the same

What does a director of football in the GAA do exactly?
If he got sacked from his position as director of football tomorrow but kept his managers job would he still get paid?
Professionalism in the GAA and the GPA not involved at all, now how did that happen!!

Are you any relation of the Tyrone Delboy?

John Evans is doing a hell of a lot more then just managing the senior team. He has been going in to schools, particularly Clonmel High which gets all the players from the big football clubs in Tipp, he has a role in the underage setup too I think. 2010 will be his 3rd year in Tipp, why would they only start paying him now if he was doing the same job?

Don't think Tipp should have to be defending this appointment, every county has paid officials. We are paying people here in Wexford to do exactly the same job the John Evans is paid to do. The difference is, in his spare time John Evans also manages the Tipp senior football team. What's the problem?
