Its a long way from U14 and U16 success - and the claims of "success" for Saul at this level appear to be overstated - and senior success. Rostrevor won 3 county minor championships in a row a few years back and, whilst being a competitive Division 1 team, haven't translated this into senior silverware.

For having such a 'good underage setup', it hasn't done much good as they failed to field a team at minor & u20 this year. Ladies football and the scor are the main focus of saul club.

As a Saul man I find the contents of this thread very embarrasing. Saul are currently a Division Three side and probably the very best they can hope for or aim at over the next few years would be promotion to Div 2 although our recent record there was far from good and that Division is even stronger now than it was then. Our underage teams have done well AT THEIR OWN LEVEL but would have very little prospect of competing at the highest All County level. There is no problem with having hopes, aspirations and dreams but these must be realistic. Otherwise one only appears foolish and people become disheartened and disillusioned when the unrealistic aims are not achieved. In other words: GET REAL

Dunach, I dont mean to sound condecending but, keep plugging away. Every club had several groups. You have the workers who keep grafting to improve their club, & you have the talkers who talk up their club but make little serious contribution other than to embarass the others.

My experience is that Saul have plenty of workers who are trying to improve the standards within their club. Good luck to them!

well said dunach, we have struggled in div 3 for the past 2 seasons if we were to be honest, (we were nowhere near the play-off spots) and this year is likely to be a lot tougher. I couldnt believe what i was reading, even among our neighbouring clubs we are lagging behind ie kilclief, rgu and even ardglass, i dont think we have beat them since we got relagated.

i honestly think that the team need's to get the older players out of the panel. i watched them once this year in the championship and there was more younger legs standing on the line watching than on the field. how can they be great players when they are not getting the chance now. field a young team who will be there fighting in a few years. i could name 7 players who could play for your seniors. it looks like we will have the younger players getting the chance this season which hasnt happened in a few years which led to us suffering.

Did we not play Ray Nixon, Paddy McKenny, James Grant, Ben O'Reilly, & Kieran Gordon last year? Not exactly old men.

As a very proud Saul Man I apologise for the idiocy that is this thread. We are working very hard at our underage structure in the hope that we can feed future senior success. We, as a club, do not pertain to be among the top clubs at any level within the county, this is merely an ambition as it should be for all clubs. To those who made this claim that we are among the top, keep your opinion to yourself unless you can back it up with fact and don't profess to represet our club.

This thread has started some conversations. I hear it was discussed by the county management panel last week.

Saul's underage development is one of the best in Saul. Look back 5 to 10 years ago. Saul had barely enough to field a team, but now, squads of 25 to 30 are available! Last season Saul had a large number of players on Down teams. Look at the underage coming through!

Oh and cillchuaabu, i believe three of the saul underage teams stuffed Kilcoo teams last year! And if Kilcoo did win, it was by a small margin and a very good match! And as for the other teams you mentioned, all the different ages groups in Saul have come up against most of them, and in most cases were victorious!

SaulMinor, you are having a laugh if you're saying your minor team even comes close to Kilcoo's!

Kilcoo are so far ahead of most teams in East Down that they could probably field reserve juvenile teams. Their U-16s were All Ireland champs a couple of years ago & their minors came within a whisker of being Ulster champs last week.

Kilcoo could go on to dominate Down football for a long time. Saul will not.

Saulminor on your first point, how many underage developments do saul have?.."Saul's underage development is one of the best in saul", aye harp on therer sure! Just because you have 25-30 turning out it doesn't matter, you need to be coaching the young ones properly. Kilcoo are doing this and winning, Saul are claiming this and not winning. Saul have definitely made it everyone, they have players on development squads.
saulminor do you honestly think that i am one bit worried that a few of your underage teams beat kilcoo in the league? If your answer to that is yes then i am in stitches laughing. I must let you know that the kilcoo minor team that reached the ulster final didn't win a championship until 2007. Thats Under 16 level....not Under 12 or 14. That kilcoo team got hammered by bredagh in Under 12 and 14 level. What did they do when they got to Under 16?....hammered bredagh on their march to the championship. The point i am putting across is that your teams may be winning now but when push comes to shove, our lads have more hunger than your lads, as your boys will drop out with soccer or some other distraction.
So your saying the Saul minors would have beat kilcoo minors, just shows your range of knowledge of Gaelic football. Your seconds team got beat by our thirds also last year, I wonder if Saul had of won that game would you be on harping on about it, probably.
I think everyone reading this will have some laugh at you!

Kilcoo have two good underage teams, minor and u16s. Look at the others, useless. But Saul have quality players through out all their teams. Saul have come a long way in the past few years. Eddie Harney has made Saul's underage development into one of the best in the county. I admit Kilcoo u16s and Minors are two brilliant sides, but Saul's underage arent far behind.
