Loughnanne ,
I wonder is it possible to be anymore negative? :-(
I've great respect for Mosey Coffey - that team wasnt a bad team indeed , we never got near a last 12 with Mosey though ..

Square Ball Agree with you on Kilkenny and Cody, why cant more people and teams focus like that? Not everyone wins the All Ireland but everyone can be their best. Dont agree with you on Laois and Kildare. Both ahve wandered in the years PM (post micko). Your assesment of the Laois situation is a little lopsided. Micko did look elsewhere while they were going well at one stage. Have a feeling there is one job in Leinster he is still interested in. True to say that there are problems in Laois. Dont forget that both those counties would be starting form a higher base than ours as well. They dont have to hit Div 4 to be considered unsuccessful. We will see in future on how the development at underage goes, I would be first to say it is the area of most pressing concern in Carlow, in both codes. The current success in hurling is borne out of ten good years of underage work, which is not neccesarily being met at the moment. Final point, in Laois there are up to 60 young lads involved at each age group at county level. WE dont always have 30 in Carlow.

An interesting stat on Laois underage success - the first year they made the breakthough at Minor level , they brought together a development panel three years earlier . The interesting stat being that at the initial U15 development year - they had 30 U15's.. The year of these lads birth ( 1983 I think ) there were just 60 boys born in Laois.
Thats impressive by any county standards .. I have to laugh when I hear the likes of the Dubs making excuses for not winning All Ireland Minors .. With a pick as small as 60 able bodied boys , Laois picked one in every two and still had All Ireland success.
To be honest , there is a lot of nonsence and conjecture written about Micko over the years that he is going to this county and that - one minute he is off to Galway , then Dublin , then back home to Kerry . I can tell you he is very happy and content in Wicklow . He may never win an All Ireland , but he is keeping a success starved county as happy as if they are winning All Irelands. He enjoys it , he is lifting spirits and re establishing the game and giving hope .
Personally I would be the type of manager that would want to win every competition and every game and thats why I admire the Brian Cody's , Jack O'Connors etc - they want and demand success in everything . In defence of Micko and his approach - he comes from a time and an era that all that mattered was the C'ship . I still think the C'ship is miles and miles ahead of any other competition .
Micko has an aim and a goal and realises that c'ship success means sacrificing other competitions with his current squad . Were the Wicklow squad as strong as Kerry or Tyrone , it maybe different . We have a heavy reliance on keeping the likes of Glynn , Hyland , Stafford and Furlong fresh , primed and on the boil . We also have a lot of Under 23's that are coming through slowly. I've mentioned here teams such as Tipperary last year that go too hard too early in the league and are gone early in the C'ship. Perhaps there early season perfomances lull them into false senses of their own abilities?

Thats a funny stat square? Only 60 boys born in that year in Laois? Can I ask you for a source, not doubting ya, its been an interesting exchange. See in Tipperary they have appointed Evans as a "Director of Football". I think its a solid idea from a long term point of view, although what happens when he leaves etc, and will the position be linked to the co manager's spot?
Vinnie, you Welsh soccer player, I do think Carlow will win in May, and thought that long before we beat ye on Saturday. I presume you think Wicklow will win? Amazing considering your county's poor record against us in recent years, but heh, I like dealing with facts. Most of your starting team from last year played on Saturday too which must be another consideration. Again thats a fact. Finally I see you feel Micko has no influence on last year's championship run? First time I have heard that from a Wicklow poster...

getonwithit ,
Re: Laois , read it in the Sunday Indo around 2 years ago - they had a very good piece where they profiled what Laois had done to have such a fantastic underage setup . I was amazed that they were able to do what they did when you consider the low birth rate of boys that year .
I guess it shows that with the right investment , setup , encouragement etc what can be achieved . Its a pity they havent translated it into an All Ireland at Senior Level - they have a golden generation that are starting to age now .
On your point about most of last years C'ship team starting against Carlow last saturday - I think there was 8 or 9 .. so probably about half . Again as posted numerous times as I'm sure you'll agree - May is a whol different ball game .
Would I make Wicklow hot favourites? - not a prayer ... Our recent record agains Carlow in any competition is poor to say the least , throw in Tom Walsh affair and the fact its a local derby and it makes it very hard to call - and thats no matter how both counties do in the league etc this year .
Its a huge game for both managers too .. Luke Dempsey although more than likely the underdog , will have ear marked this game as his game to begin changing Carlow fortunes .. Micko knows a defeat here would neutralise a lot of the great feelings and experiences from 2009. I would imagine Micko would have preferred to have drawn a Longford / Offaly / Westmeath / Wexford in the first round instead..

Getonwithit, never said that Micko didnt have an influence, he most certainly did! But the players now know what they can achieve and will still know this once Micko leaves, thats why i believe they will win more championship matches. Yes i do think Wicklow will win in May because championship is a completely different story, Micko doesnt care about O'Byrne Cup or Shield or leagues for that matter. Not just saying that because Carlow bet us, he has never cared about it!
