Walsh for Wicklow?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Duno how Thomas Walsh could be named in a provisional panel for Wicklow as he would be illegal to play as he would have to transfer back clubs..again.

As Thomas Walsh transferred out of county from Bray back to Fenagh .. I dont believe there is anything stopping him transferring cross county in 2010 from Fenagh back to another Wicklow club ?.

I would suspect something is afoot - Micko wouldnt leave his name in place unless he knew something?

In relation to the Tom Walshe debate if he had a Wicklow residency address on his transfer request to play for his Club Fenagh in Carlow then the Leinster Council erred in granting this request as he should have had a Carlow residency address.

Tom may well have two address's , one Wicklow and one Carlow ? .. I know many people who are lucky enough to own two houses..

Pistelero: dont think youre right there. He can live whereever he likes. The point is that if he wants to play for Wicklow he must play club football in Wicklow. Now he can submit a transfer form anytime he likes, but quite honestly if Leinster council allow it then the whole transfer system is brought into disrepute. They are surely turning a blind eye to blatant skullduggery and should stop calling themselves an amateur organisation.

Dont know about all of the examples you've cited but o Leary was raised in Dublin, educated there etc (albeit through Wicklow parentage). It dosent exactly amount to the same thing as TW. If that were the case we'd be complaining about the likes of Liam Hayes which we arent. The fact of the matter is that he was blatantly poached. Lets not wear blinkers on this issue

Otherwise your comments seem well balanced. i.e. you acknowledge there's still a game to be played come May.

Point taken on John O'Leary , however we could complain about the Timmon's and O'Doherty's but we wont .. all in the past .

Tom Walsh from my knowlege decided to live in North Wicklow - just like the 90,000 or so others that commute each day from Bray , Greystones , Kilcoole , Wicklow Town etc . So lets be balanced here and admit it was his decision to live where he lives . Had he moved closer into Dublin and lived in Stillorgan , he would be most likely playing for Kilmacud Crokes and on the Dublin team and there wouldnt have been half as much about it.

I see there are 3 Laois players transferring to a Dublin club ( think its Oliver Plunketts? ) and should they decide to throw their lot in for Dublin it wont raise too much ripples in the national press.

Mark Mullins relocated to Cork for work and ended up togging out for Na Parsaigh and Cork and again there wasnt half as much about it .

Lets face it - just because its Wicklow and the Micko influence its taken a life of its own and become a soap opera .

On the subject of the game in May - you better believe we understand there is a hell of a tough game in wait . I'm only too glad that Micko is in charge , because if anyone can ensure the players are 100% focused and not looking beyond the Carlow game then Micko can .

Wicklow have it all to loose in the forthcoming Carlow game , they will be seen as warm favourites while Luke Dempsey can enter the game as underdogs and with little or no pressure . Last year Wicklow were underdogs in every game , this will be a test of what its like to deal with a weight of expectation - tough mental and physical challenges to be crossed in May for sure.

SQUARE BALL weve been thru all this before. The Timmons bros. were from annacurra but they were living and working in Dublin for years. Ditto Sean Doherty. John O leary doesnt come into it sure if thats the case Carlow could make a case for Liam hayes. All the lads you mentioned were genuine cases of people living and working and playing their football where they lived for years an years . None of them were playing for Wicklow and suddenly were poached with inducements. Carlow people are not cribbing because he left so much as the manner of his leaving. A spat with his own co. board which would in time have been resolved were it not for the blatant opportunism of Wicklow egged on by Obrien and Odwyer. The situation this year is beyond belief and if he plays for Wicklow it is a travesty and a sad commentary on Wicklow. WE should be men enough to refuse to have any more to do with it and get on with our own players who are well capable of managing without this interloper.

Its up to Wicklow at the end of the day not to get caught up in the whole neighbourhood rivals thing with Carlow on the day. Forget about the Walsh situation.

If we do that we will win.

I doubt if you were chanting for "The Imposter" to be gone when he was helping us win v Down , Cavan etc last year? . He was an important part of last years success. I know I was very happy to have him .

My own perspective is that he has done absolutely no different than the countless other county transfers over the years . Only difference is that Media are happy to hype this particular case and drag it on .

If the GAA want to stop such things happening in the future - its simple , make it absolutely ineligible for anyone to play outside of the county they were born in , or have a 5 year living rule i.e You must be fulltime resident in the adopted county for 5 years before being able to represent at county level.

Square ball: first of all , while I was delighted to see Wicklow winning ,I was not cheering for Walshe as any one who knows me can verify. I have always been very dubious about this matter but was prepared to live with it. Last years carry on though finally turned my stomach. The man was not living in Bray as you imply but at home in Carlow. He did not play for Bray Emmetts .hadnt been near the club for over six months yet Odwyer was prepared to go calling etc. I hate rehashing this matter but its people like you who choose not to see whats blindingly obvious that makes me. You cannot ignore the facts and just glibly stick to your own "PERSPECTIVE". Wrong was done here and no amount of clouding the issue with examples of genuine transfers going back over the years will alter that. You know exactly whar Im referring to but cannot write here because it would not pass moderator.

Best to agree to disagree on this one :-)

Whatever happens to Tom Walsh , I wish him well with whatever he decides to do . I would love to see him at No.9 again this year and time will tell ..

Lets hope that if he isnt in the fold for this year that we find someone to partner Stafford ..

From what I have seen there are very few with the exception potentially of Mickey English .. there are a lot of average to good midfielders in the county , none can touch Stafford though . If there are a few gems lying in Junior A and Junior B I havent seen them . Coolboy won the Junior A this year and Richard Walsh the former County U 21 player seems to have gone backwards - nothing I have seen anywhere would encourage me... in an ideal world we would have at least 3 midfielders of Staff's ability on the panel ..

Bandwagon, Sean Doherty was to play with Wicklow seniors but County Board weren't up to organising much, ie transport and whatever, not much has changed. So he switched. Good move!! Also Walsh did play some matches with Bray.

Opinionator ,

Correct re: Sean Doherty .. to be fair to Wicklow Co Board it wouldnt happen today . Arguably Dublin wouldnt have won All Irelands without him . Yet some on this board believe that Tom Walsh transfer is unique and unlike any other in history . Completely the opposite in fact - no different than any other transfer as Sean Doherty case proves & that was 30 years ago .

As I mentioned previously if GAA wanted to stop this they could , but they wont . Impose a 5 Year rule on players transferring clubs across county bounds . You must play for new club in new county for 5 years ( or at least 3 ) before being able to represent new county .

Correct also on Tom Walsh and Bray - he certainly has played C'ship for them.

If lack of a job was the only reason Walshe wasn't playing for Wicklow i couldn't see it much of a problem he would be fixed up with one no need to go to Australia, the reason Dohertey played with Dublin [where his family had moved to live] was a a bit like Walshe with Carlow, the Wicklow County Board at the time wouldn't give him a traveling expenses to drive to training or matches he did play under age and played in a Leinster final in 1967 at under 21 for Wicklow i think they were beaten by a point.
