125 greatest hurlers and footballers

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Published in the last two weeks. Couple of questionable ones in my opinion. Strong bias for the the Annes isn't really surprising! I think it was brought up on here before in another thread, but Phillip Wallace only 103rd on the football list is nothing short of a disgrace. The credibility of the entire list is laughable, if Brendan Furlong can get it so wrong about our present footballers how can we trust his rankings of players from 100years ago?

Hillarious stuff all through I thought - certain players were put at 50 who werent fit to lace someone in the 125 bracket's boots.

I agree with nocky on this one,how can some young upstart like Ciaran Lyng at 55 and Philip Wallace at 103rd,that's nothing short of ignorance

I do agree with him on one thing,Nickey Rackard is Wexford's greatest hurler.......that's all

As well as Wallace 2 big ones stuck out for me, Leigh O'brien at 89 scored 1-97 (read that on the county final program) for Wexford, 3rd highest scorer of all time, played mainly in a poor Wexford side played most of his Career in the wing forward or wing back roles,
Also Red Barry been Ranked Higher than Rory McCarty in Hurling it just doesn't make sense in the slightest, to my mind Red has never really played for Wexford.

I wonder how much time was put into that list,Colm Morris surely deserved to be in there,

Two interesting things come to my mind on the top 125.... How LOW Red Barry is on the football list, and how HIGH he is on the hurling! Thats just my opinion and not a reflection on Red as a player, but more so Furlong as a sports reporter...

I don't think much pass should be put on this list of players. It is just Brendan Furlong personal opinion. some of the players that have been left out of the football list is very questionable. how Scott Doran has not made it into the top 125 is unbelielable, i think its not down to scotts football ability, also how Colm Morris is not on it when current players like David Murphy and David Fogarty make it. There is no way that the two Davids are near as good as both Colm and Scott.

Not sure where mr furlong hails from, but he's been reporting for People papers for many years. Cant say i'm a fan of his. If you could check back through the years, i'm fairly sure that a lot of the more controversial news items attached to wexford gaa could be attributed to the same mr furlong. In his defence tho, it was a brave move to name 125 hurlers and footballers in some sort of preferential order. We all have our opinions and our favourites, but how many of us would attempt to compile the same list ? I doubt that anyone could do it without causing insult and offence to somebody. As the old saying goes "you cant please all the people, all the time".

In fairness to the man though,he must be doing something right if we're all talking about him and reading his column's.

Kind of going the way of Eamonn Dunphy if you think about it

100% correct rossytilidie. Absolutely anyone could put together a list, what I can't understand is how badly put together these particular lists are. This man is supposed to be an expert on Wexford GAA, and is paid to report on it, but he clearly hasn't a clue. If I was that bad at my job I would be collecting my P45! I will be buying the Echo for my local GAA from now on.
