omaghredhand County: Tyrone Posts: 1037 523932 So just to be clear, no Hogan medal then? That semi was in 1970 wasn't it? St Malachy's went on to win the McRory and got beat in the Hogan final. No,no, no and no. St Malachy's reached the final in 1970 and two goals in the 6th and 8th minute of injury time beat them by a point. Everyone cried "foul". Colaiste Criost Ri I believe it was. The following year we met them in the semi, and because O'Neill was with Distillery the GAA would not give us a ground. Hence the game at Omagh with TV cameras and the press from England and all over Ireland. Although Malachy's were hot favourites we won 4-9 to 1-8. By that stage of the competition mysef and Steven Prenter, the full forward line, (13 a side in those days) were both crocked and played no further part. We won MacRory and Hogan that year 1971. We also won the O'Keefe and Stevie anjd I were back for that. Alas "The Boot" Bro McGreevey now had my best mate in goals and I was an outfield sub. The consolation was that Brian Gormley, who made the Antrim team of the millennium, was also a sub. The Boot used 5 footballers in the final, people who had not played before the final. The daftest thing was just before the Hogan Final I went down to watch Antrim Vocational schools in a friendly against St Thomas's. TheVoc schools also made both all Ireland finals that year, winning the hurling and beaten by a point in the football. Anyway St Tom's were short so I stood in in goals, at football, and me a midget. As is the way I saved two penalties, taken by future N.Ireland soccer internationals Gerry and Tommy Armstrong. So the Boot wanted ME to do goals in the Hogan final. Fortunately wise heads prevailed and Kevin O'Loan remained in goals and ....saved a penalty. So the Boot wouldn't have me in goals at the hurling, after me playing for two years before the injury, but wanted me in goal for the football, the old fool who we all loved, and adored, and worshipped. When I said I have only two Mageen medals I meant compared to the ordinary St mary's pupil at that time. sean Sands had 5, and 16 Ul;ster medals in all. I only had 3, two Mageen and one at intermediate. So...........

Strange things DO happen in life.

Like the story above about the penalties is actually true, but in a Gaelic football game normally, with the ball in the air and EVERYONE being allowed to use hands, absolutely useless in goals.

Now at hurling you had a stick..........

And as I keep saying on different threads, winning medals means being in the right place at the right time, talent can have little to do with it.

By the way, who did Forrest Gump play for? was it mayo? LOL

We played Knockbeg in a practice match this year, we being D.I.T 'A' Freshers football team, also defending All-Ireland champs. We only beat them by 3 or 4 points. Granted it was only a practice but I know for a fact Chris Conway (Knockbeg Manager) was not thinking that. They are an extremely young side. But they put up a serious fight. Maybe not contenders this year, but next years bunch of lads got to a Leinster final u16. But I'd still have high hopes for them this year, if they play to their ability which in the past, has been the cause of their downfall, not using the ability they have.
