Would a 'place' kicker not be someone who only strikes from the ground?

Or am I being pedantic?

a point down in injury time with a kickable free to level it up. the only man i'd give to the ball to is oisin mc conville. superb under pressure.

I know dingle it's ridiculous all that Northern aggression. I would bring in rule changes to HS to put a stop to it all. Anyway Oisin McConville, Colin Corkery, Jimmy Keaveny, Anthony Tohill and Greg Blaney would be my top 5.

Maurice Sheridan was one of the bests in his heyday.... but Oisin was top class, Corkery, Matty Forde and the great Maurice Fitz are the ones that stand out!

Down in the 90's had Ross Carr & Gary Mason in the same team. Both in the top 5 in the country at that time. Any frees from mid-field in were a good bet to be converted.

Maurice Fitz was super cool too. The point he kicked against the Dubs in Thurles was class.

A lot of people have named Greg Blayney here as a great placed kicker. Maybe my memory is gone but I remember him as a great player but not as a free taker. Mason & Carr , later Greg McCartan, were the free takers in that team.

Not to sell Blayney short because his contribution was massive. Such a good no.11, he won ball, picked out passes, set up scores, & grabbed a few himself. He was a class player but also a true hard man, hard but fair not dirty. 3 All Stars says a lot.

Remember Greg Blaney well, i actually mind him using the dropkick in the 1996 ulster final theres something we dont see anymore in gaelic football.

Thank you. I have spent a week thinking "Blaney, a place kicker? how come Mason and Carr hit them then?"

I did not like to post this in case I really had gone senile.

Can anyone tell me.When did the plastic ball replace the leather one? Scoring from a fifty wasn't as easy in the leather ball era.

read my original post.

Nowadays vaughan is scoring from 65 yards strolling up to the ball. No idea when the balls changed however.

Patrique , you are correct in the fact that Greg Blaney wasnt ever a significant free taker on any of the down teams, shorty Teanor would have been before Gary Mason and Ross Carr. However, Pater Canavan was without doubt one of the BEST dead ball players of his time, this probably goes un noticed due to his expertise at kicking them from the hands ( he was without doubt the first player to really master this). He did however RARELY miss from the ground, and his kicking display in the 1995 AI final alone would put him up there, he rarely ever missed and towards the latter end of his career, he more often than not kicked them from his hands, but still an exceptional dead ball kicker

Maybe some of the dubs will correct me, but am i right in saying that 5 different players scored points from frees in the '95 final ??
If so, it must be some sort of record.

Off the top of my head, i think 4 of the 5 were : charlie redmond, paul clarke, keith barr, dessie farrell, and ?????

For place kicking off the ground Enda Muldoon is a decent exponent of it. Going back though Colin Corkery was top drawer.

Declan Browne was as good a free taker as you will see, off the ground or out of his hands.

Over the generations there are just too many to mention, there have been many sensational place kickers over the years but I suppose if there was a gun held to my head I would have to say Maurice Fitzegerald.
