No bias here, but have there been many better place kickers around than matty forde ? If you doubt me, just check his scoring stats--amazing. yellabelly (Wexford) - Posts: 1062 - 30/12/2009 18:00:17 522520 Link 0 |

Maurice, no need to say any more was the best two legged kick of the dead ball. His other townie Bryan Sheehan may rank up there with the best before his career ends. From who I have seen-Matt Connor, Tony McTague, Dinny Allen, Colin Corkery, Jimmy Keaveney, Barney Rock, Sean O'Connell, Mick O'Connell, Mickey Kerins, Larry Tompkins, Charlie Gallagher, Mick Sheehy, Mick O'Dwyer, Ciaran McDonald, Sean O' Neill and I am sure a few names are gone a missing. No offense to Peter Canavan but was he really a great free taker, of dead balls? lostintime (USA) - Posts: 533 - 30/12/2009 19:13:10 522552 Link 0 |
Oops I forget to mention Matt Forde and Paddy Doherty. lostintime (USA) - Posts: 533 - 30/12/2009 19:16:23 522553 Link 0 |
legendary place kickers must include in no particular order: Charlie Gallagher (Cavan) and Ronan Carolan (Cavan) Sean O'Connell (Derry) Cyril Dunne (Galway) Mickey Kearns (Sligo) Peter Lambert (Tipperary) Jimmy Keaveney (Dublin) Mikey Sheehy (Kerry) Paddy Docherty (Down) Mick O'Connell (Kerry) Mick O'Dwyer (Kerry) Tony McTague and Matt Connor (Offaly) and Barney Rock of Dublin and Brian stafford of Meath. There are plenty of others, all kickers from the ground. When I first started watching Jimmy Ward of Antrim was famous for being able to score from a "50" in winter, with big toe capped boots and a ball that weighed about 15 kilos when it was wet as the ball absorbed the rain. Mind you he took a 20 yard run up. With today's equipment Mark Vaughan can kick 60 yard frees with a two step run up, and from what I saw of Kerry minors this year, Jack O'Connor's son could be the best place kicker ever. patrique (Antrim) - Posts: 13709 - 30/12/2009 19:22:38 522560 Link 0 |
Dellboypolecat County: Tyrone Posts: 8661 522491 Royal_Girl2k9 County: Meath Posts: 784 522482 I'm talking about from what I've seen. You have not seen much so. And neither have you if we go by your posts. Best players EVER: O'Neill and Canavan Best free takers EVER: O'Neill and Canavan; Best high fielders EVER: O'Neill and Canavan Best hurlers EVER: O'Neill and Canavan. Now the girl is right, Canavan was a marvellous footballer but his greatness is not due to place kicking. Paddy Cunningham of Antrim is a place kicker, not much good at anything else, so owes his place to his free taking ability. You couldn't say that about Canavan. So leave the girl alone before I, Patrique Galahad, am forced to drive to Meath to call you out and settle matters in a duel. Which obviously I will win, easily. patrique (Antrim) - Posts: 13709 - 30/12/2009 19:28:26 522565 Link 0 |

I'm not saying canavan was the best place taker but he was up there for sure, think big tohill was hard 2 look past 45's were a cert but if i had 2 say who i thought was the best i have seen i'd probably go for trevor giles who bar the 2001 final rarley missed, btw im just going by the 1s i have seen so if ur talking bout pre 1994 then i cant really judge. duke_raul (Tyrone) - Posts: 993 - 30/12/2009 22:28:08 522678 Link 0 |

Best young place kicker that may not win a bloody thing as he plays for Carlow is Paul Broderick, awesome accuracy from anywhere inside 60m. galwayfan (None) - Posts: 764 - 30/12/2009 23:42:50 522725 Link 0 |
patrique - why you end up in a spat on every post? B'tween urself 'en dellboy ye've taken over de show. Should be a separate thread for northie's scraps. dingle1 (Clare) - Posts: 805 - 30/12/2009 23:52:39 522729 Link 0 |
As said earlier, one of the best was Charlie Gallagher. I saw him score 2-10 against Down in a game in Kingscourt in the mid 1960's when i was a very young lad. I remember it well because myself and my father cycled to the game and that was a round journey of 36 miles !! As Mary Hopkins said "those were the days" !!
