Best GAA Book for '09

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I got the book about the Limerick hurlers (Unlimited Heartbreak) as a Christmas present, it would be more suitable to someone from Limerick; but that said its well put together and is quite an enjoyable read.

Just finished Mickey Harte's - great read, got through it in 3 days which for me is a record ! Good insight into the man and his methods - lots of inspirational quotes and references to other US coaches.
Now reading 'GAA - An Oral History' by John Scally. So far so good but prefer biographies ! Also got Cody which will be next. Although I see Ger Loughnane slated it today's The Star calling it a flop and "totally lacking in hunour and personality" and"disappointingly boring" !!
I will read it and make my up my own mind !
Next on the list after above for me will be the Waterford footballers one.

Sorry Dammon, Only getting back to you now. The book is very enjoyable especially for those of us who have left these shores in the past to work and join a new club so to speak. The GAA is alive and well throughout the world it would appear. This just gives us an insight into the work being carried out by ex-pats to carry on playing gaelic games in lands far away and puts to bed the idea that Gaelic games are only played in Ireland, Britain and North America.

Dead on Dammon, I haven't read that one yet, but from reading another thread on books, I like yourself would recommend Rule 42 and all that by Sean Kelly also.

I agree, the book has taken a lot of criticism, but I thought it was excellent

Re CODY;
Ger Loughnane slated it today's The Star calling it a flop and "totally lacking in hunour and personality" and"disappointingly boring" !!

Not surprising considering he doesnt seem to have much nice things to say about Loughnane in it and he really gets stuck into him over certain incidents.
For critisising Kilkenny for pulling across the knuckles a couple of years back & that he saw himself as a sort of messiah in Clare in the mid nighties, who revolutionised the game of Hurling.

Id have to agree with Ger though, Its as bland a book Ive read since Sean Boylans.
Very repetitive & almost a chore to finish.
He gives zero away regarding himself, as a man away from hurling, strange for a self titled autobiography.
I hate the way Martin Breheny seems to write every other chapter, thats ghost writing gone a little to far!

Hartes was good enough, but not an unable to put down book either.
Starting Cusacks tonight, looks a bit better.

Hartes book never once mentions money, I wonder why this is, at the same time he is so anti young guys taking a punt in going to Australia to try to make a living. They may never have the chance to make the money Mick H can from 'public' speaking. As for his gaa mad house, etc, Mickey this is no different than many other houses around the country, the shed full of jerseys and training equipment. His book plus others like Jack O C book etc added to my experience of teams from under age to senior club, make me more convinced that the manager has only a minimal input, if you don't have the raw material you will not win. Players win matches not managers, selectors, I cannot understand why counties and clubs waste so much money on the trainer/manager each year, this could be put to better use, developing the games, not lining the pockets of someone motivated by the money. Three all irelands and only 5 players remaining each time, his words, is Mickey H not also part of the burnout of 'top' class players. The list of games and performances at the end of the book, was that really necessay Mickey??? Tyrone still have some of the best gaelic players around and will be one of the teams to beat in 2010.

Is Mickey Harte not entitled to make a living?? You seem a bit anti MH.

If he can generate a few bob from 'public speaking' as you put it or a few training sessions with clubs, why shouldnt he? The clubs etc who approach him are obviously more than happy to pay him whatever he wants.
They are all at it. I was shocked when a relation of mine told me that his club had another All Iireland winning manager down for a night last year and what money they gave him.
It was a good weeks wage for anybody for his couple of hours.
But again if they are willing to give it the best of luck to him. They approached him.

Cody's book was pure waste of money, same mantra's trotted out chapter after chapter. No great insight into motivational techniques, training techniques. No details of any rows, banter craic anything. Very disappointing and have to say GAA books are poorly written in the main.

Working on a dream was very good. A section or two were a work of fiction though!! For example, the whole section about Ogles cruciate injury looked a bit daft since he lined out in the county championship in september!!!

I agree, apparantly after last year's Leinster final they were mean't to have come to stay over in Gorey and train on Buffers Alley pitch and there was mean't to have been a bit of a flair up but nothing was said.Extremely disapointing book. Also, his wife Elsie won more for Buffers Alley & Wexford than he did through out his career,he said nothing bout that neither
