514450 Guys, Cavendish was never going to get it in a million years. The british public don't care how many stages he won in the Tour De France the fact is he didn't win the Tour itself so thats that. Infact I would doubt alot of people know who he is. I though Button would win it, but very pleased for Giggs. Also I had forgotten how gorgeous Jessica Ennis is, up there with Denise Lewis now!!!! As they would say in Monaghan, they're unreal hey!!!
Well said.Go Giggsy-legend.Who cares how many stages Cavendish won-dear god the same lads spouting that are the same lads ridiculing United for "only" winning the League last year.

512607 Cavendish would have to win the tour de France outright to even be considered a seious contender. Haye or Button i'd say. Button because he was brilliant all season. Haye only had to fight for 36 minutes in fairness
I think its widely acknowledged that Cavendish (by his own admission) will never win the Tour. He is a true sprinter, not a climber. To win the amount of stages he has is an incredible feat. He was robbed.

Like Patrick Kielty said, Giggs is a legend. But you don't become a legend overnight, you become one throughout your career! I wouldn't put any of the other nine in the legendary bracket but I would put Giggs in that elite group. Does that make him Sports Personality of the Year though? Not at all.
Cav won six stages by the way. You can't just ignore that by saying "Who cares?" A childish reply like a lot of the comments on the Non GAA forum these days. Surely the whole point of the forum is to debate, now the best retorts people can come up with is "Who cares?"

I agree that "who cares" is a poor retort, but you're effectively saying that about Giggs by wilfully ignoring what he did this year.

Hardly! I accept Giggs has had a good year and all especially given the stage of his career that he is currently entering but I don't agree that he was one of the best sportspeople in Great Britain in 2009 (or anywhere near it). Nor do I think you really do, your grá for soccer and your admiration for the player is possibly whats clouding your judgement. In the cases of others on here who think he deserved it, thats possibly down to ignorance.
Any other European country, Cavendish would have won it! Although in these parts, cycling is not given the respect it deserves. But even for Jess Ennis and Jensen Button to be overlooked in favour of Giggs is an insult to their achievements!

There are certain users on here who I believe the majority of users ignore, these would include the likes of Tomoo7, Hipster, Millhouse, 32_4_1, Dellboypolecat, Ta32, Fredickwood, Duffy89, et cetera. Their illiteracy is only matched by their ignorance.

Haye might have won if he had beated one of the Klitschkos for example. On a seperate point, its amazing how boxing has changed over the years. Didn't Roberto Duran fight like 80-ish bouts in the 1980's?? I know he fought at a lot of weights and during a time when there were some great rivalries, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard etc... but these days a top fighter might fight only 3/4 a year?? If that!!!

Would you agree that your grá for cycling maybe just maybe might affect your judgement?
For me the closest contenders were David Haye and Jessica Ennis, both world champions. I'm not into cars and driving and don't really follow Formula 1 but would I be right in saying Button benefitted somewhat by the way the season went and very few people would consider him the best f1 driver in the world? Fair play to him he won it anyway and deserves his nomination.
Ennis can feel hard done by but somebody has to lose in these things and Giggs won. No conspiracy, no injustice just cold hard facts - Ryan Giggs is the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2009 and got it on merit. Like all the other nominees he is a brilliantly successful sportsperson.

Overall Result:
1st Giggs 151,842 votes (29.4%) 2nd Button 96,770 (18.74 %) 3rd Ennis 80,469 (15.58%) 4th Cavendish 55,960 (10.84%) 5th Tweddle 38,907 (7.53%) 6th Daley 36,929 (7.15%) 7th Murray 19,936 (3.86%) 8th Strauss 17,237 (3.34%) 9th Haye 13,916 (2.69%) 10th Idowu 4,507 (0.87%)
I see Betfair have launched a betting probe surrounding a plunge on Ryan Giggs in the hours leading up to the announcement of the result. Very peculiar that a contender who was 999/1 (and matched at that price I believe) just a few weeks ago could be backed from 3/1 into 8/11 on the final day and then go on to win by almost 55,000 clear votes. All this is made all the more amazing when you consider that the sum of his 2009 achievements were no greater than maybe 200 British sportspeople.

I'd have had an Ennis, Cavendish 1st, 2nd, but I don't know in which order, I couldn't really argue with either. I'd struggle to give it to Giggs to be honest.
On a separate note, since David Haye was nominated, does Amir Khan have a right to feel hard done by? I think his achievement in winning a world title after being knocked spark out just a few fights previously tops Haye's one fight and win of 2009. I wouldn't care all that much to be honest, but I was surprised not to see him nominated.

Cycling is a hobby-Nothing more nothing less.In relation to Giggs winning the award I would say that it was a ****-poor year for british sport in terms of ACTUAL success and that in most other years he would not have come close but he had an exceptional year and allied to that success came a disappointing year for GB sport(the ashes and Button getting the best car in F1 are the best),so I would suggest that this contributed to Giggs winning it also but I will not accept someone biggin someone else up for the award when there clearly was no stand-out nominee.
Resorting to the betting pattern which occurs every day of the week when it becomes clear who is going to win is to quote yourself Loyal "Childish".......Oh oh,I think I heard a toilet flush........

A world heptathlon champion, a triple jump world champion (not to mention the silvers and bronzes at the Athletics World Championships), a diving world champion, a gmynastics world champion, two darts world champions, a Formula One world champion, six stages of the Tour De Frances (and the emergence of Wiggo), the Ashes, a heavywight world champion, a super middleweight world champion, a super lightweight world champion, qualification for the soccer World Cup, three golds, six silvers and a bronze at the world rowing championships, three British teams in the semi-finals of the Champions League....
And Fredickwood thinks the UK had no "ACTUAL success" in 2009. He goes on "It was a disappointing year for GB sport!!!"
Although, the first eight words kind of set the tone for his post. Clueless could not describe this post, let alone try and come up with a word to describe the opening line! Cycling is a hobby, sure if thats the case what is soccer Fred?
