BBC Sports Personality 2009!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I'd like to see the Isle of Man Missile Mark Cavendish win this. He won the Milan San Remo, three stages of the Giro and six stages of the Tour including the final one on the Champs Elysees. Easily the fastest man anywhere on the planet. Confident if a bit on the arrogant side too.

Ryan Giggs's position in the final ten is only slightly less peculiar than his position so close to the head of the Paddy Power's betting market (something like 40/1 into 2/1 in the last 2-3 weeks) for this. It'll be a disaster if he wins, I suspect the edit the BBC will give him will be very very poor.

Jensen Button, Formula 1, world champion is the clear favourite. Hard to know how he'll do, the sport is not what it was but Lewis Hamilton was second the last two years!

Jessica Ennis, world heptathlon champion, is the other main contender. Her combination of looks, personality and success in 2009 probably make her the one to beat (my opinion). Also the event takes place in her home town.

Andrew Strauss (Cricket), Andy Murray (Tennis), Tom Daley (Diving), Beth Tweddle (Gymnastics), David Haye (Boxing), Phillips Idowu (Triple Jump) are the others. It'd say a lot of Britain's 2009 sporting year if any of them won.

Cavendish would have to win the tour de France outright to even be considered a seious contender. Haye or Button i'd say. Button because he was brilliant all season. Haye only had to fight for 36 minutes in fairness

Well Cav is never going to win the Tour, more chance of me winning it! However to win six stages takes some doing, out of the ten nominated, you could only argue that Jensen Button achieved more.

I think he won the second of the Tour of Ireland's stages Duffy.

Twenty-six newspaper/magazine editors are each asked for a list of Britain's ten best sportstars and the names who appear most frequently are the ones who make it onto the final show. Out of the twenty-six, Phil the Power was nominated three times. Very little case can be made for him.

Of or have?

Its the British public, not the BBC, who pick the winner.

Duffy - why would it be a disaster if giggs won? He is the most decorated player in the premiership and has just had a very successful year. The man's a legend.
