I read in the Fermanagh Herald today that they are going to spend £1.3m on Lissan that so called white elephant. Is this a wise investment given the misgivings of many?

Here we go again. Yes I'm after reading that in the paper. From what I can see and my father says the same, no one ever admitted they got it wrong the day they went along with by a poor soiled small farm on a windy mountainous hill remote from the civilization or any main road which even the county managers and players hating the place even though the same batch of gael bosses have tried to convince everyone that it was the best thing since the invention of sliced bread! Sorry for the rant but japers guys Fermanagh needs a better location for such a county training facility and this one and and a half million pounds or so is going to be wasted yet again. Hopefully I'm wrong. Let's hear the opinion of others please?

Replying To harp04:  "take a look at louths!! hardly one of the big hitters on the all ireland stage!! they have 6 full size pitches including a 3g, all floodlit. a cross country track, 12 changing rooms including the latest multimedia mumbo jumbo. fair enough their changing rooms aren't quite finished yet but will be soon. surely the county board can see their shortcomings regarding lissan??"
Here we go again. I can't believe that over £1 million is to be spent up at Lissan. Do the powers that be not realise that it is the wrong location for natural grass playing fields? It is at too high an altitude for grass to grow properly in Fermanagh;s climate. it won't matter what type of soil is lorried in ; what type of fertiliser is used; how it is maintained or how judicially it is used, mother nature will determine growth levels. Altitude, lack of shelter from prevailing winds, lower temperatures and heavier rainfall than at lower levels will deter growth. This was pointed out to the original development committee by an agriculture adviser at the time but ignored. There are, in my opinion, only two solutions.
1. Sell up and relocate to St Michaels ( i have a feeling that they are keen to do a deal on this)
2. If it is agreed to stay on the mountainside, then install All weather playing surfaces (Expensive to begin with but pretty durable and long lasting, requiring less maintenance)
These ideas will be ignored of course.

Don't do it county board ... ..unless it's a clever high altitude training camp they want ...Surely land is nktbsooooo expensive that we can't acquire 15 acres at an accessible location where u won't be blown away 24/7 doesn't have to be the burbs of Enniskillen ... NIMBYs will be the problem though and yes the St Micks St Joes St Fancheas neighbourhood is a total no brainer ... the facilities there are already superior to Lissan sure

I read in the Herald today a big spread about the man who is to makes a big difference in his new county board role as development officer. But when it comes to facilities I wonder is it all talk or will we end up with just cosmetic changes to the likes of the big white elephant of Lissan? I'm not convinced.

Has anyone been up to Lissan ?? Is it worth all the talk or is all just rearranging the stones in the car park and spraying the weeds ?

Lissan never has fulfilled its purpose and never will! Time for a fresh thinking and move to a more convenient location and provide a futuristic facility suitable for the next generation of footballers.

Well said ernelad. Our county board people especially the development committee members are too set in their ways. It's time for a shakeup in order to get rid of the deadwood and bring on board people with vision who can plan for, source funding and develop 21st century facilities which our players and team managements need to maximise the potential in oder for Fermanagh to progress comparably with other counties who are light years ahead in such provision. With over 27,000 views on this Lissan thread should be sufficient evidence that a review for change is well overdue. Are you listening Co Board?

Wind your necks in guys. I see your complaining more as an attack on the gallant Enniskillen contingent who were the key men behind the Lissan project which remains fully functional. Even that whingeing macca guy appears to be happy with what we have achieved. Get yourselves an Easter egg and.enjoy. bye bye.
