Lissan

I hear plans are afoot to get rid of Lissan which was seen by many a a white elephant project. The proposal comes from members of Club Eirne and is to be put out at the county convention and apparently selling off or renting Lissan for a wind farm. The suggestion is that there will be no specific training venue and the plan involves clubs offering their premises on a rotational basis for Fermanagh training.

The problem with lissan from day one it was a pet project and no objective study was done on it. The site is too far out of town in the back of no where and too windy and cold for such a site. The best place would be one of the underdeveloped huge industrial sites around Enniskillen town. It's time to sell off lissan and bring in much needed dosh for the county board.
Brewster Park hope to develop another multi use field and could lease it during county training times.

Flog Lissan or rent out for wind farm(good idea as there's plenty of hot air around Fermanagh GAA). Do a deal with St Michael's to use their proposed new sports complex near Cherymount Link Road. This would be a big bonus for Fermanagh as most of the County team usually comes from St Michaels anyway.

Sell nothing yet !! When the county board wont be open about where any monies have went over the past number of years do you really want them to get their hands on this cash. Its time that the cards were put on the table and they admit that they are completely busted, and allow competent people in to try and rescue what credibility is left. The white Elephant will only ever get back a fraction of the cost anyway.

Hairy posters the Lissan project was the best ever development carried out by the Fermanagh County Board.

Joe McGurn at the time had the vision for a place excellence where our footballers could train having first class facilities. From memory the cost of the site was cheap enough and with funding support the project good value for money. If the same facility had to be developed today it probably could not be done for the equivalent money today.

To talk of a white elephant is a bit rich but at least an elephant wouldn't sink in a swampland like the hairy posters own Skea premises. Enough said.

A white elephant is an idiom for a valuable but burdensome possession of which its owner cannot dispose and whose cost (particularly cost of upkeep) is out of proportion to its usefulness or worth.[b]YesterdaysMan, How in the name of everything holy can you say that Lissan is good value for money ??? Not one county player has anything good to say about this place, its under used for good reason .........it doesnt serve the purpose it was intended for ! Hence the rows about the county team using Brewster Park to train, if this White Elephant was good value for money this row wouldnt have raised its ugly head. Back when this was thought of funding was being banded about left right and centre, Im sure that nobody, no sporting, no government, nobody in their right mind would back this project if it was presented today !!

Horses, Yesturdaysman talks like someone who never leaves the sheltered life of the clubhouse and has not a clue about what is really going on with regard to Fermanagh club or county football.
Lissan was completed without any proper consultation process involving the clubs in the county (a common trend which continues today) and now it has been left to ruin - a complete 'White Elephant'.

As far as I remember the Lissan project was driven on by a very prominent GAA officer at the time. The County Board, ie. every elected club representative in the county, agreed as money was plentiful then. As usual there were many mutterings outside of meetings but nobody had the bravery to stand up inside and say what they thought. They all followed like sheep. Now the 'elephant' is becoming more and more grey and will soon become abandoned and return to the jungle from whence it emerged in the first place. Somewhere for the sheep to hide perhaps.

The address is
Fermanagh GAA
20 Lissan Lane
Lissan
Enniskillen
Fermanagh
BT74 4PF

Lon -7.571805
Lat 54.374493
X COR 227876
Y COR 347399

It's well signposted. Coming into Enniskillen from the Belfast Road turn right at the first set of traffic lights which leads you towards the Tempo Road. About a mile or so out the Tempo Road turn left at the top of hill where the signpost displays Fermanagh GAA. From there on keep following the GAA grounds signs until you arrive at the 'white elephant'(joke) but keep in mind too that these a small rural roads!

Has Lissan been sold off for a windfarm and if its true will the clubs get the share of the money?

The whole purpose of establishing the Lissan excellence centre was to facilitate county teams. So why has the facility been largely ignored by the senior team management? How many times has it been used by them this season or even last season??

Lissan we wish time CB took the hit a find a proper location and facilities for all county teams to prepare on. I have seen many other county training grounds and anytime you say you're from Fermanagh they laugh at our centre of excellence.

Apparently, Irvinestown is being looked at for a new centre of excellence and I wonder is connected with the Bawnacre expansion?
