The estimate figure of social welfare fraud is somehwere between €2.2Bn and €3Bn. That is almost 75% of the cuts that the Government is looking for. So while the bankers are to blame primarily we cannot excuse this crime. Shame on all those guilty!

Ah give it up will ya!!! Fraud is fraud. The sins of the bankers doesn't make it right for these people to do what they were doing. The bankers deserve our scorn but that doesn't mean to hell with the rest of the place. Some have been at it for 12 years and more. Every single one of them knew what they were at!

Are you saying it is ok for that man and his wife to cliam the pension of a dead woman?! Catch a grip will ya!!!

This programme also clearl stated that there are as many, if not more, 'Irish' at it than 'foreigners'. Shame on those who do so and shame on the Department of Social Welfare who couldn't be bothered! They'd rather strike than deal with reality. Root them out!!!

Disgraceful performance by the Dir Gen of the Department and also disgraceful comments from that social worker who admitted that she would defraud the state if given the chance yet blamed the Gov for not catching people who defraud!! A shocking double standard!!!

Didn't see the show last night. What were the normal routes by which people were commiting social welfare fraud? Childrens, disability, rent allowance?

2 wrongs don't make a right. There has been and there still is massive fraud going on at all levels of our society. Fraud is a crime regardless of whether its a Banker living in a 2 million quid pad or a social welfare recipient living in a Council estate. All fraudulent activity needs to be clamped down on and the offenders penalised. However the penalties should be pro rata, in other words the big fish should get it in the neck.

lads, i m a public sector worker, boo hiss, and i m currently building a house. All my stuff is bought locally, and all my labour is irish - not a rascist etc, just want to support local employers. I got a tiler in to do jobs for me and we agreed a price, assuming it was cheque payment, or at least the bulk of it. When the strike went ahead i had the 2 lads ribbing me about how we were destroying the country, etc. When i went to pay him he said he d only do cash as it would affect his rent allowance! I said ok, but i d have to get a better price. He said he d let me off with the vat.. That he never pays anyhow! and i know hes flat out working the wholetime. More fool me..

Drink is right.

Yes the bankers are getting off scot free, but at the end of the day 52000 isn't mickey mouse money.

I'm a public sector worker and I was getting over paid last year, unbeknownst to me. I got a call a few months into it and was told I'd have to pay back over 2500. I had no legal right seemingly to pay it back but bent over and took my punishment as I figured it might stand to me in the long run as regards permanency or any other issues that might affect me and didn't want to be blacklisted within the sector.

And then you see people like what we seen the other night just putting their hand into my pocket and helping themselves. Blaaahhhh. Don't make me sick.
