Counties used to be represented by a club, normally their championship winners, who wore their clubs colours - e.g., the Antrim teams in the 1911 and 1912 football finals wore different colours. Then the representative club could select players from other clubs in the county leading to the county teams. Most counties wear colours from one of their successful early clubs. Antrim wear the colours of Seaghan an Diomas - one of the big clubs in the 1910s. They were based in Shauns Park(now O'Donnells ground McRory Park) which hosted All-Ireland quarter finals etc back in the day.

In the 1950s provincial champions had to wear the provincial colours if there was a colour clash.Hence Connacht teams in white,Munster in blue,Leinster in green and Ulster in Saffron.Armagh were allowed to retain their orange colour in '53 as it was very close to saffron.
Roscommon played in the 'tipperary' colours from the 1930s until they met Cavan in the '43 final when they changed to primrose/blue cuffs to avoid a clash with Cavan's blue.

Kerry lost 1972 (Replay) All Ireland to Offaly wearing the Munster Blue while Offaly wore the leinster Green. I think this was the last final that counties played in their provincial colours but am open to correction

Wexford got the nickname "yellowbellies" from a hurling challenge match played between a team of 21 Wexfordmen and a William III (formerly William of Orange) backed Cornish team in the late 17th Century. The Wexford team wore yellow sashes around their waists to distinguish themselves from their opponents. We hammered them on the field obviously, gaining revenge for the Battle of the Boyne!

To this day we are known as the yellowbellies and have yellow "bellies" on our jerseys. No idea where the purple came from though, it's pretty unusual in GAA and indeed most sporting circles. Anyone know?

I can remember Down playing in Ulster's colours in Croke Park in the '90's. Might have been a league play off against Cork? That would have been colour clash.

Anyone else remember it?

Fermanagh have had a few.

In the early 1900's fermanagh wore green and white hoops and was taken from the Teemore Shamrock club who dominated this period with 7 county titles in a row and included 10 titles over a 13 year period. As far as i know they changed strip around 1918-1920 when other clubs grew stronger in the county and wore all green jersys up until a period in the 1980's when they wore red and green (for what reason i dont know). And later moved back to the green and white again.

On the topic, what does everyone think of the new fermanagh jersy?

I dunno, does purple have something to do with lent it does? The Catholicism is a bit rusty with me, it's been awhile since I was indoctrinated.

same here but it never leaves you once its washed into to you at a young age, hence their insistence on holding on to primary education, and teacher recruitment. anyway as a chap i lived too far from the chapel to become an alter boy, but we would get jobs like building the crib, cleaning the dead priests headstones beside the church and also putting purple capes over the statues in the church at lent and advent. everytime i see a wexford jersey i get a flashback to balancing on a shakey ladder pulling a purple dress down over saint joseph.
Dont think it has anything to do with the jersey, but you never know
