the 1957 all ireland football final between louth and cork due to the colours clashing, louth wore the green of leinster and cork wore the blue of munster. OLLIE (Louth) - Posts: 12224 - 03/12/2009 13:30:47 501864 Link 0 |
Counties used to be represented by a club, normally their championship winners, who wore their clubs colours - e.g., the Antrim teams in the 1911 and 1912 football finals wore different colours. Then the representative club could select players from other clubs in the county leading to the county teams. Most counties wear colours from one of their successful early clubs. Antrim wear the colours of Seaghan an Diomas - one of the big clubs in the 1910s. They were based in Shauns Park(now O'Donnells ground McRory Park) which hosted All-Ireland quarter finals etc back in the day. pearsesabu (Antrim) - Posts: 663 - 04/12/2009 20:25:59 503392 Link 0 |
In the 1950s provincial champions had to wear the provincial colours if there was a colour clash.Hence Connacht teams in white,Munster in blue,Leinster in green and Ulster in Saffron.Armagh were allowed to retain their orange colour in '53 as it was very close to saffron. worple (Roscommon) - Posts: 351 - 04/12/2009 20:47:56 503415 Link 0 |
Kerry lost 1972 (Replay) All Ireland to Offaly wearing the Munster Blue while Offaly wore the leinster Green. I think this was the last final that counties played in their provincial colours but am open to correction dingle1 (Clare) - Posts: 805 - 04/12/2009 22:08:22 503552 Link 0 |
Wexford got the nickname "yellowbellies" from a hurling challenge match played between a team of 21 Wexfordmen and a William III (formerly William of Orange) backed Cornish team in the late 17th Century. The Wexford team wore yellow sashes around their waists to distinguish themselves from their opponents. We hammered them on the field obviously, gaining revenge for the Battle of the Boyne! nocky (Wexford) - Posts: 2059 - 04/12/2009 23:50:43 503660 Link 0 |
I can remember Down playing in Ulster's colours in Croke Park in the '90's. Might have been a league play off against Cork? That would have been colour clash. blu (Down) - Posts: 1240 - 05/12/2009 00:06:56 503677 Link 0 |
