i think it is important to enforce the rules strictly when the players are u-10 u-12 .
but then at that age they do get excited

At that level they should enjoy it and thank god i had no problems with u12 to u15 level but the mentors ond parents on the sideline are the main problems.

Lads I rarely sbuse refs but on a couple of occasions I have lost the plotwith referees who actually were not aware of the rules of the game.
On one occasion I was taking a free and an opposition player stood 5 yards in front of me. I asked for him 2 be [put back but the ref ignored me. I moved back 5 yards myself with the ball but he followed me. I asked the ref again to put him back and he said if I didn't take the free that he would throw the ball up.
I took the free and narrowly missed. The barrage of abyuse I gave the ref led to a 2 month ban but I still reckon I was right to do it.

On another occasion I was running for the ball with an opponent and shouldered him. He fell and got a free. When I protested that it was a fair shoulder charge the ref informed me that one can only shoulder a player when he has the ball (I kid you not). Further protests followed which led to the ball being brought forward and the resulting kick proved to be the winning score.
Anyway what happened after the final whistle resulted in me gettin g a one month ban and again I feel I was right.

Now a bad referee I would not abuse but a referee who does not know the rules but yet has the neck to go out and referee a game and get paid for it deserves nothing but abuse and bad abuse

westerner.. if you don't know about the grading system then you don't know much about GAA refereeing... along with the majority of GAA supporters i'd say.. Even to become a foundation level referee you have to do a written exam and a fitness test...

Only one exam no need for another but we will be assessed every game and graded on how we do .

I would allow a shoulder when 2 players are going for ball unless you caught him high with your shoulder you say and you deserved your month for abusing the ref.

some refs get what they deserve. its so annoying when playing a match and the ref gives a wrong decision that hes the only one that saw whatever he saw. is it any wonder that people on the sidelines start shouting abuse

So your saying it is ok to abuse a ref just because a mistake happens ? wrong and i suspect you have made mistakes playing football think about please and sometimes players ,mentors etc have there own rules . Am not slating you or players but they break the rules refs are there to apply them.

I dont think Parents realise what they are doin handing over kids to some of the Maniacs who are somehow involved in managing teams. But a lot of the blame should fall on the Parents-You'l have your pup the way you rear them.

And if the children hear the parents abusing refs they think it is ok to do it.

I reckon that anyone in charge of an underage team should be made ref a few games just to see things from their perspective. I reffed a few U-12 and U-14 challenge matches a few years back and it really opened my eyes. Why anyone would voluntarily subject themselves to that is beyond me. I dont care if it is thirty quid or a hundred and thirty they get paid, I still wouldn't do it. Maybe it was just me but I found it really difficult. Far too many things going on all at the same time to keep track of it all. I also did umpiring in proper senior matches when I was younger and I cant say I found that all that easy either. A lad would come running in along the endline and shoot for a point. Sure by the time you could even lift your head, the ball would have flown past the post and you would have to make the decision as to which side of the post it had gone. Some times I just guessed. Which is probably why that particular ref stopped asking me to do umpire for him.
In all seriousness though I would recommend to anyone here complaining about inconsistent reffing to give it a go themselves - it really aint that easy.
Maybe that could be the punishment for anyone sent off for abusing a ref - instead of a suspension, they could be forced to ref a couple of underage games in front of a crowd of angry parents (mothers especially). They might stop and think about it the next time.
