(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Tell me this Dellboypolecat, and i'll be honest with you I'm seriously in the dark over this matter.I'm a manager of a under 12's team but I never seen 1 refereee give out even a yellow card. Why is this ? (even though my team punch and kick opposition players !!!!)

I know we can all get seriously over heated during the course of a game , wheter were playing or mentoring , but the one thing I try hard not to do is abuse a referee. At the end of the day , 99.9% of refs do their best to be as fair as possible and they are only human. Having done a wee bit myself (when the ref doesn't show , the away mentor takes charge) I know first hand how difficult it is.

duffy, that made me laugh. We've all seen underage kids who are useless hitting people slaps of the hurl by accident but kicking and punching......I think maybe the management should have a word with them.

Under 12 I think there shouldn't be cards but instead forced substitution if some kid deserves a red.

Whilst bad referreeing does drive people mad, people have to remember the refs are contributing a service and I doubt if many go out intentionally to ref badly.

The Galway county board should be ashamed of themselves over their treatment of the refs.

To be honest it is up to you to control as you must be learning them to do this and at u12,u13 level this year i give no cards out as i find it easier to talk to players that young and they listen.

Puddersthecat

Good comments about galway county board could not stand by there refs.

Underage is probably worse than senior football id say with the parents taking it way too seriously. The language out of some of them is unbeleivable and they dont even care what the youngsters beside them think. In Galway i would say its the same as anywhere else(I'm talking about football referees here anyway ,go to only a few hurling games). Some referees are grand ,consistant with picking up off the ground (Aragh the baaaaaalll was roooollling ya ******** ref) and overcarrying(Sure they were fouling the **** out of him ref ya *******). They still get a bit of abuse. Which does happen in every sport by the way and small amounts of shouting by a minority will happen. I am not condoning it. The only problem i have with refs is consistency. Some allow a lad to take a few extra steps sometimes if he dragged a bit ,then the next time blow up within asecond. Most refs give maybe 1 or 2 frees for picking the ball of the ground in games when it should be closer to 10 or 11. Some refs just seem to swap frees every second time to keep both teams happy. Having said all that i am thinking about doing a refs course next year so. So if anyone abuses me ill give ye a right good walloping!!! Ye have been warned.

Well if there drinking they should not be allowed on a field to be honest

I should point out that it is a very rare occurence. Dellboy I'd say your a fairly good ref, ya seem to take it seriously. Refs who don't care are more likely to make bad decisions.

Cards aren't really issued at u12 level because they are trying to encourage youngsters to play the games and not discourage them.. The abuse will only stop if respect a la rugby (pains me to say that) is implemented from u8 wpwards.. I normally tell the mentors to substitute a player if he's giving me any sort of abuse.. But from u13 upwards its cards all the way.. I normally tell the two captains at the toss that i won't stand for any backchat or abuse (including abuse of or to my officials) and that i would have no hesitation in sending someone off for that offence and then the captains go back to their teams and theres very rarely an issue after that... same thing with the trainers.. i tell them before the game that i won't take abuse because it sets a bad example for the kids...

There is one thing about me i do take it serious and train as well and never drink before or nights before games because players are training as hard all winter and least i could do is keep up with play. And am going to make mistakes like players but i will be always fair to both teams .

This thing that most abusers have that Refs are not consistent is ridiculous. Of course Refs should strive to get as close as possible to each other in their interpretation of the rules but if you want exact consistency you will have to employ computers or robots to get that. Remember all the abusers on the terraces don't agree with each other so why should expect all refs be carbon copies of each other. In fact you will find that even refs who have different interpretations are still closer that most abusers. The people who do the abusing know very little about the rules only that the Ref should be giving more to their team. That is their rule book and it is their opinion that they have a right to vent their frustrations on the most vulnerable person they see, namely the ref. Everyone who ever went to a match will have some complaint about a ref because we are all human and cannot see things the same way all the time. Reasonable people make allowances for that difference of opinion while bullies and idiots do not. Usually rash comments from the sideline say much more about the abuser than about the Ref and that includes you Leroy.

Of course Dellboy knows all about being abused even when he is not the Ref.

Refs are getting €30 for under age matches so in my book they are fair game for abuse if they get something wrong. The manager or coach who puts in the time and effort training all year (for free) and gets robed in a final by an idiot ref (getting paid) making some stupid decision is not going to take that lightly now is he..

thats boll-x Rex.. In Limerick at least.. we only get €25 for an under age match and get nothing for doin Linesman which if you are aware should be qualified referees... i have refereed at all levels this year and ive often travelled an hour and a half each way plus the hour for doing the match for €25, take into account that i use 2 gallons for fuel to go to these places and it works out at €4.50 an hour (approx.).. many of these games take place within 10 mins drive of the coaches home so don't give me that rubbish about money.. The coaches don't take the abuse that we have to take (from players, mentors/trainers and spectators)... No organisation will ever get 100% consistency from referees because the rules just like the laws of the land are open to individual interpretation.. Just look at the sentences handed down by different judges for the same crimes...

Do managers and players ever make mistakes boss and in the managers oponion the ref made a bad mistake but maybe he did not just a coach hitting out at someone .
