Definatly an All Ireland , but with all the gloom surrounding the country , a World Cup would give the whole country a reason to rejoice RenardRedHand (Tyrone) - Posts: 547 - 18/11/2009 23:29:57 487877 Link 0 |

I'd even rather a leinster over the world cup. as meaningless as were some of dublins leinsters in the last few years i still wouldn't give up any of them for any award in soccer. Too many dodgy accents on that ireland team. superdub (Dublin) - Posts: 392 - 19/11/2009 00:33:28 487939 Link 0 |

You know Micky Harte said in a recent interview that we should be aiming to bring GAA football to the world-so my answer is GAA World Cup and Ireland winning. kerrykerry (Kerry) - Posts: 1779 - 19/11/2009 14:06:13 488302 Link 0 |
Seriously though as a Kerry person it is fantastic to win the AI (soft ones and all!!! FACT!!!!), however, as an Irish person, we sure need a boost and Ireland winning the World Cup would be something else! Its just a pity the World Cup is soccer kerrykerry (Kerry) - Posts: 1779 - 19/11/2009 14:08:47 488305 Link 0 |

32_4_1 who are idiots, is it anybody who would prefer to see THEIR COUNTRY win a World Cup over an All Ireland, that nobody outside of the winning county cares about. I was in Donegal for a wedding the weekend of the All Ireland football final, and in the hotel bar the day after the wedding all four televisions were showing the Manchester derby. Somebody obviously asked for the All Ireland to be put on at some stage, so one television was switched over to the All Ireland final, and once that was over, it was back to the Spurs v Chelsea match. The point I am making here is that most people do not really care about the football or hurling championship once their county is gone, yes they will watch the matches, but are not overly concerned who wins. Yet were it a big World Cup match involving Ireland there would not be a telly in the land not showing it, everybody glued to their seats, all on tenderhooks. Nothing unites a country like a successfull national team, so you can have all the All Irelands in the world, but they do not matter a damn outside of the winning county. gilly0512 (Galway) - Posts: 1176 - 19/11/2009 23:28:44 489069 Link 0 |
gilly look at my earlier posts on the page before. im agreeing with you. its disgaceful anyone choosing an all-ireland over the world cup 32_4_1 (Meath) - Posts: 4174 - 20/11/2009 00:03:38 489092 Link 0 |
WORLD CUP...Imagine having everyone on the HOGAN STAND united behind one cause. Nothing else could do it. You could wear an Irish Jersey all over the world, and it would mean something. SAMMYTHEBULL (Galway) - Posts: 1646 - 20/11/2009 00:05:36 489095 Link 0 |
There is no comparision here. To win the All Ireland would be all the ambitions I have for my sport right there. It would be celebrations with all those that mean most to me. It would be seeing grown men cry etc. It would be real and hype free (except of course in teh county itself). The team would be legends in their county but you would still see them about the place etc andbe saying to whoever with you - that man has an All Ireland medal. For me that is what it is about and what the World Cup can never deliver. Qualification for the World Cup would result in another slew of those add, "Hi, I'm Tomy Cascarino" - in a big English accent and all the hangers on trying to make an easy buck. As for this team, I find it hard to connect with the Sean St. Ledgers of this world who become Irish for their trips over to Dublin to play a match. For them in reality it's the England B team. The likes of Robbie Keane who has the cheek to crib about Croke Park and the atmosphere there - as if that's somehow the stadium's fault. You know that the lads representing your county have been giving up their own time to train and prepare for the honour of their county and for the glory and immortality that would go with winning the big one. In fairness to this Irish team, I was very impressed with them on Weds night and we all know they were robbed. It was the first time I really felt something for their performance and it was great to see them show such guts etc. Bit the connection we have with our own - that could never be there.
