Most successful Ulster Gaelic team of all time?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Obviously, the weakest of the four provinces in the history of Gaelic Games by some stretch but which of the nine counties has been the most successful in the GAA's 125 year history? Derry - 1 All-Ireland, 7 Ulsters, 6 Leagues. Tyrone - 3 All-Irelands, 12 Ulsters, 2 Leagues. Armagh - 1 All-Ireland, 14 Ulsters, 1 League. Cavan - 5 All-Irelands, 39 Ulsters, 2 Leagues. Donegal - 1 All-Ireland, 5 Ulsters, 1 League. Monaghan - 0 All-Irelands, 13 Ulsters, 1 League. Down - 5 All-Irelands, 12 Ulsters, 4 Leagues. Fermanagh - 0 All-Irelands, 0 Ulsters, 0 Leagues. Antrim - 0 All-Irelands, 10 Ulsters, 0 Leagues. So: 1. Derry (Have won 6 National Football Leagues, more than any other Ulster team) 2. Cavan (39 Ulsters tells its own story) 3. Down (5 All-Irelands not to be laughed at) 4. Tyrone (Dormant for 115 years, then suddenly woke up and started to win all before them, thus earning them this elavated position) 5. Armagh (Level with Donegal on Leagues and All-Irelands but shading them in Ulster) 6. Donegal (See number five) 7. Monaghan (Three more Ulsters than Antrim) 8. Antrim (See number seven) 9. Fermanagh (Still to win an All-Ireland, an Ulster or a League, here's to the next 125 years!)

Are you ntaking the p**s? Down are the real aristocrats of Ulster. No othernteam wants them in the championship.

Admittedly I would prefer to avoid Tyrone these days..

History doesnt count for much but we do have it

Blu no offence but the days of wanting to avoid Down in the Championship are long gone! I'd prefer to draw Down than Antrim in the championship these days as Antrim are a strong team on the way up. I think Down (like ourselves) need a bit of rebuilding.

For football Loyal, that is spot on, except Antrim Have 11 Ulsters, do not believe the stats on Hogan stand.

Overall, camogie and hurling, Antrim have 2,472 Ulsters and 6 All Ireland's.

Hence our modesty.

PS: Tyrone may have lay dormant for 114 years, not 115.

Ireland's Call is pretty grim alright, but for those Tyrone and Donegal posters casting aspersions about musical atrocities, I call your Phil Coulter and raise you Hugo Duncan and Daniel O'Donnell - 'the horror, the horror!', as Marlon Brando once put it. I'm not well even thinking about it, the lights are getting dimmer, I need to lie down a while.

loyal it pleases me that you have a love for all things derry but being fair i cannot accept your claims of derry being the most successful ulster team, when in fact we are more likely either bottom of the top half or top of the bottom half. had you said most successful in terms of club then yes i would agree.
as for you che finney i also think you are well off the mark as well, me being a hurling man cannot accept the fact that armagh are above derry in the hurling. you obviously dont know a lot about the sport considering that both monaghan and donegal (historicaly) are above armagh in the bragging rights to ulster crowns. it was a decent attempt mind you as a wind up, but a silly one nonetheless. report reads must try harder!

Blu youre like so many Down men I know , seriously deluded and determined to live in a bye gone era. My Father in law is a classic example. He keeps usin phrases like , aristocrats and blue blood until I remind him how well Down have fared in the last 15 years. He says things like ,`How did we lose to a small ball county like Tipperary or Limerick ? He hasnt a clue about how other counties in Ireland have progressed since 1994. Down need forget the past a fight for some dirty ball , otherwise their arrogance will stifle any chance of regrouping in the future.
