Growing up playing underage for Dungloe, we never really saw the Gaoth Dobhair rivalry that much, as they were in the North division and we were in the South. So our biggest rival at underage level was probably Glenties, and Killybegs would probably have been number 2 (and I guess you could say Naomh Mhuire - although they were always in a lower division, so we rarely played). For decades it was always Eunans and Gweedore but I don't think theres to much of a tradition with the other clubs that are talked about lately the other big rivalery would have been Ballyshannon but they are not the force they used to be anymore. rivarly aint about the two most successfull clubs like eunans and gweedore back in the day. There would be a bigger attendance at Ardara/Glenties under 12 game than eunans and Gweedore. In mid 90s ardara or nc hadnt one a senior champ for years yet still had thousands at their games in 95 which we lost.kilcar/glen/killybegs can all be thrown in with ardara/glenties as well.i aint stirring up stuff but south west got by a mile most supporters and they way smaller in population than letterkenny/buncrana/ballyshannon/bundoran etc. paddy92 (Donegal) - Posts: 141 - 06/07/2010 20:23:58 698761 Link 0 |
I would be inclined to agree with you on the well supported sides from South West of the County as the bigger town clubs don't have the same level of support like Letterkenny Donegal Town Balyshannon Twin Towns but years ago they did have much of that decline is due to the pub culture that exists nowadays as young people are brainwashed into a false environment to watch cross channel soccer or the World Cup at present and drink to they drop. You could gauge the rivalery with attendance at games ok but I still think that as far as the football is concerned it's what happens on the pitch and what is remembered by the genuine GAA club people of the different encounters between the teams makes the great rivalery and folklore. Back in the 90's, it would've been Killybegs and Red Hughs for one... but in the new millennium I'd say Eunans and Gweedore... It's strange cause you would be inclined to go for 2 neighbouring clubs but the games between the clubs mentioned above were full of fire, passion, heart and heartbreak... everything that would epitomise our great game Mickey Collins (Donegal) - Posts: 48 - 07/07/2010 14:24:35 699394 Link 0 |

From reading the posts here its kinda lookin like there isnt a lot of rivalry anymore in the county. Someone touched on the pub culture that has come in and i agree that it has changed the face of the GAA in a major way. When young lads, and girls, get to 17 or 18 they fall into the grip of alcohol and want to spend sundays in the pub and wont put in the effort anymore to get togged out for their club. I hate to sound like a preacher but sadly i can see it happening all arounf the county. Its sad and its a society thing. Maybe the minister for finance could help int the budget by putting 20c on the pint - or would it have any deterrent at all. Most of them seem to be headin into Asda for cheap drink anyway. Oops sorry for going off thread but its a reality donegael (Donegal) - Posts: 188 - 26/10/2010 20:09:44 803952 Link 0 |
